| The Canadians have what appears to be a brilliant invention -- pouteen (not sure if I've spelt it right). Chips, gravy and cheese, a gift from above you may think. In reality, they live in permafrost for 11 months of the year so as soon as it hits your table, you get an icy blast from somewhere and it instantly solidifies like some demonic thermoplastic. Personally I'm a purist and like my chips with just salt & vinegar, though I'm quite partial to the Lothian salt & sauce (brown sauce watered down with malt vinegar -- slippery chips). Will we need to produce ID cards to buy chips? The government could have a central database to ensure we aren't consuming too much fat, beer or any of the other major food groups.
