| School- Navy- Falklands War (ended before I passed out) 15 years later, left become a IT manager and I now look after 1/2 England. Most of who have Degree's and assume I have also. Good trick to play is: When someone writes to you messing around in Pigeon English/French, go to BableFish and translate everything they said into two different lanuages. Roughly translate both back in to English and shut them up instantly by convincing them you are fluent in at least 2 languages. Then give them that stare that says "so you have a degree eh"?

| Went to the University of Life at the bottom of Hard Knock Street! I had always wanted to join the RN from a very early age and so I did. Given my time again, I would go into further education. It's one thing I've regretted.

| Did two years of a 3 year course at a Polytechninc, it's now Kingston Uni, but not when I was there. I think further education is wasted on 18 y.o.s

But do a real subject that people want to buy. You get a better choice of jobs, more money and you don't have to work so hard for it. While I recognise that several people can carve out a place in the world on natural talent alone that isn't by any means going to happen to most people. It is said that Richard Branson didn't get A-levels but neither did the girl wiping the tables at Starbuks. I notice that the one person who made it to the top in IT in this thread may not have a degree but he seems to employ a lot of people who do. I'm 55. Who employs 55 year olds? Unqualified 55 year olds? My brother and I run an instumentation company and I do most of the design work. It ain't millionaire stuff but it means that if I want to go to Finland wreck diving on a rebreather I can just go. If I'd stayed on my pre-degree job of driving a bus would that have happened? Who knows? nigelH Youth is wasted on the young. |

| Left school and went to college. Got a OND in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Toyed with the idea of University, but wasn't really sure what I wanted to do. Didn't feel right at the time, so ended up going into IT as it was something I'd been doing since I was about 10 anyway (messing with computers). Went to Uni every weekend anyway as my mate was at Loughborough so I did't miss out on the social life. Got a break doing the numpty stuff (loading software / building PC's / toner cartridges etc) back in 1992 and worked my way up to Unix System Administrator for a large brokers firm, did a load of courses and ended up here (via being a contractor for a while) as a Network Manager for a Global Mobile Phone Co, with an MCSE, CCSE and so-on. However, I've decided I know what I want to do a degree in, so I'm currently studying for a degree in Natural Science with Oceanography.
