| Speakers' Corner: Discuss Human belief (non-religious) vs. fact in the Non-Diving Related Forums forums: we were told that vaccination does not guarantee immunity. Too true, despite vaccination I've had measles, mumps and rubella. ... |

| It is an unfortunate fact of life that everything is a risk, and any vaccinations carry a risk. This recent study seems to suggest that their is no direct causal link between the MMR and Autism, but someone, somewhere, may have a tragic reaction to it. That is the risk, and we will never know, with any certainty, who it will affect. I had to make this decision over MMR for my three kids, who, thankfully, suffered no adverse effects. What our generation has forgotten is that Mumps, Rubella and Measles used to be killers and, unless we reach the critical % to be vaccinated, they could return and, in a population with reduced immunity, the consequences would not make pleasant reading. This is not conjecture, but fact. I support MMR, but then again, my kids and my two grandaughters are fine. Cold comfort for the poor devils, who feel victims of this. Jim |

| I think the only thing that needs to be saids here is that measles can kill your child vaccination reduces that risk, even if there is the slightest chance of autism, having lost a child I know what choice i would make between a dead child or an autistic child. Smallpox has been eradicated through vaccination, measles mumps and rubella were on the decline, now they are rising again because of fears of autism, as i said earlier ,choice is possibility of dead child or possible autism. we chose possible autism and will when(if) we have another child.

| We opted for the seperate injections for our son, although they seeme to cost the earth. We decided that we just didn't want to take the risk with someone so precious to us. Of course there are also risks with the single vaccine. Strangely enough I found myself going for the MMR (I'm 37) only a few weeks ago. My brother contracted mumps and was extremely ill for 3 weeks, his saliva glands still don't work and he has lost over 2 stone in weight. From the discription of the pain he went through for 2 weeks I didn't want to risk getting it. So there is something else to think about if your an adult and not been vaccinated against or had mumps. I just phoned the doctors and was given it the next day. I didn't get offered a sweet after though. |
