Matt, I understand what you're saying but it's a simple case of dealing with the realities. There are burglars out there. It's not right, but as hard as we try we are never going to eliminate the problem. It's a simple matter of deciding to do something to prevent yourself from becoming one of the victims.

| Just don't try the Tony Martin approach. When a burglar attemted to break into the conservatory(foiled cos I put a cheap handle on the door which snapped when they gave it a tug) the local CPO came round and gave us lots of good advice the comic bit was the comment above but he did recomend micro dots as they give a positive ID if anything is recovered if the worst does happen, we even managed to reduce insurance premiums because I fitted BS kitemarked insurance approved 5 lever locks to all doors and rock solid window locks all round. cost about £150 to sort security properly now all I have to do is educate SWMBO how to lock up properly.

Far too many of the burglaries I deal with would have been prevented if only the homeowners had locked up properly with what was already there. Use what you've got.

| yeah like getting her to remember to turn the key a full turn on the 'yale' snip lock and put the chain on the lock bit so if they do force the door they have to then force the chain ,as that give a little bit extra security, but will she do it will she heck.

| A couple of months back I went to a sneak-in burglary. The occupant had gone to bed leaving her front door unlocked. It was the uPVC type that doesnt lock automatically when it is shut but needs to have a key turned. She was on a terraced street with the door going straight out onto the pavement. It's a common and simple MO to just walk down such a street in the middle of the night and try all the handles of the uPVC doors. As sure as eggs is eggs it won't be long before you find one that they've forgotten to lock. So anyway, she's just been done after leaving the door unlocked; someone going into her house and geting the keys for her brand new £14k Motability freebie car and taking it away. I go round to investigate the crime and knock on her door and there's no answer. I try again and still nothing. So, I try the door handle and what do you know - it's unlocked! There's nobody in. I hang around for five minutes and then she comes back, after going round the corner to buy a pack of fags. FFS!!!!!!! I despair! I bet you the taxpayer are really pleased that she took such good care of the car you subsidised for her. Dopey cow!

| yeah I used to have a lock like that on the first house I owned first thing I did when I bought it was change it for one that you need to turn key to get in, and when you did turn it fully it put a dead lock on .

| Sneak in burglaries scare me to death. Living on my own I meake sure that all doors and Ground Floor windows are shut tight and locked. Even my first floor bedroom window is locked on its "night vent" setting. I set the alarm every night and have panic button in my bedroom. I have a dog who would lick a burglar to death (!!) but it really does scare me. don;t know how I would feel if anyone got inot the house whilst I was out, I suppose if anyone got in whilst I was there, I would stand to one side and let them take everyhting rather than hurt me.
