| Like everyone else has said before me, its good that your in one piece and not lying in a hospital bed. The damage to your car can be repaired, though unfortunately its your pocket that suffers. Its just a shame the damage wasn't caused by you beating this scum bags head off your car (memories of vinnie jones in Snatch).

| Pleased to hear of the prompt and successful actions of the police - I hope those on the boards who habitually rant about the police doing nothing but hounding innocent motorists take note! Stuff like this happens. Not your fault that you just happened to be driving down that stretch of the road when this moron was about clearly just looking for a target. Classic wrong place, wrong time. As for going back, you clearly thought it was the right thing to do at the time. I would not suggest that anyone who thought they may have hit and injured someone in a car should just drive off. Thinking you might get some trouble is no real excuse for leaving someone to die in the road. You did the right thing to stay in the car while you assessed the situation, though I'm sure you realise locking the doors would have been a better idea. In fact, I'd advocate keeping your doors locked all the time - I do. From the spelling mistakes it's clear that Bren's post at 1.30 am was done when pissed! However he has expressed what are probably the views of us all. This incident is just one more example of the sorry state of certain sections of our society. I see dozens more every day. Before everyone starts ranting and blaming the police, I'd say it's not our fault. We don't create this society - we just mop-up after it. We do our best - but do you? People like this moron exist because we (the general public) allow them to. They behave like this because first their parents, then their schools and finally all the people around them just stand by and let them do it. People turn a blind eye to the crime being committed around them and then blame everyone else because they live in a crime ridden area! Andy, forget about everything else you did in this incident - by far the best thing you did was having the guts to pick up your phone, call the police and help the investigation. Because of you this idiot got locked up. I can't promise that it's going to change his behaviour over night - it probably won't. But it may be the final conviction that gets him put away for a few months and prevents him committing literally hundreds more crimes and prevents that many more people becoming victims. Every bit helps. Thanks for standing up for yourself and your community. This morning you shouldn't be recriminating yourself over the damage to your car - you should be proud of yourself for making a stand. Well done.

| sorry mark but i certainley agree that the police do hound motorists at the cost of other crime, it seems to me that up here (stoke) that there is a full blown drugs epidemic and crime wave in full effect and all the police seem to be able to do is to pull up drivers when less than a mile away gangs of chav scum bags are terrorising a neighbourhood and damaging cars breaking peoples windows kicking in front doors for entertainment then tell me that when you are driving down the road to the shop cause the local shop has closed because some scrotes have smashed it up and theres 4 police cars and two police bikes sitting there waiting for motorists that its unfair, sorry for being off topic but comments like that are frustrating mark

The reality is that the police everywhere are absolutely busting a gut to fight crime. I work so hard that my working conditions would be illegal if employment legislation actually applied to us. I am not unique - we all work that hard. For your benefit. Yes, you might see scrotes smashing up your neighbourhood. But getting a bit back on topic, just when exactly did you last give evidence in court against those yobs?

| Thanks for all the messages of support. I suspect posting it was a form of therapy on my own part. I've been mulling over it since it happened, although am now making an effort to forget about it (having written myself copious notes in case I do get called in to court). Quote:

Once again, thanks to everyone who's posted support here. I'll have to chalk this one up to experience.

| Surely if there is a conviction then damages are awarded? Even if he doesn't pay then the authorities will at least make his life miserable chasing him for the money? Maybe I'm being naiave but it is better than nothing. If the case is proven is it worth taking out a private prosecution ........... forget it, I'm sure you 'know someone who knows someone' who could help the drunken one see the error of his ways (when he can see out of his eyes again). Whilst I am against any form of cruelty or abuse against children the lack of corporal punishment in schools these days seems to me to be such an obvious reason for the lack of respect in todays youth. Nothing teaches respect like the threat of pain. It's a lesson of life - you don't go pissing someone off if they will turn round and give you a good hiding.
