Wink A just and fitting punishment...

I'm just musing (in a Finless-styleee) on what might be a suitable and fitting punishment for the toe-cheese who did this, and think I've come up with a winner!

Flogging? Nah. Too medieval - ironic given their calendar (where a number of these sad fucks mentally live). Hanging? Too good for them and too quick.

To positively, absolutely put the fear of God into them, and to allow them to understand fully the gravity of their crimes, they should, on being apprehended and found guilty on all available evidence, be made to study James Joyce to PhD level!

For any of you've had the wanton and object displeasure of studying Joyce (just seeing copies of Ulysses, Finnegan's Wake and The Dubliners still leaves me shaking in trepidation), you'll know precisely what misery is.

Given that there are, in the world, only about 8 people, post-PhD and Doctoral Thesis (and liars to a man!), who profess to understand the stream-of-consciousness-and-punctuation-free-style of Joyce's weighty tomes, I can say, without fear of contradiction, that as punishments go, this is both suitable and fitting. Not allowing the buggers out of one Her Majesty's Hotels until they can pontificate on and articulate meaningfully the themes and tenets of these vile volumes is as mete and suitable punishment as could be found.

In fact, if we really wanted to exact a terrible revenge, we could start them on a primer of Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, which should take up the 15 years of any sentence before allowing them the unmitigated misery of the larger works. After that they wouldn't know or care whether it was New York or New Year, but at least it might allow them time to ponder their sins.

The above said, if we were to take this course of action, we'd no doubt be subject to the incantations of the imploring and limp-wristed Liberals who'd claim, with some merit, that it is "cruel and inappropriate punishment". Twats.

Bren, am still in the 1st hundred pages of Ulysses (after 5 years), I use it to get off to sleep, and I am told Finnegan's Wake is the most dry, unpleasureable read you are ever likely to come across.

Another suggestion is the Castle by Kafka. Its complete spirit crushing stuff, like all his work, and would be a good follow up to the above 3.

Thats if they havent topped themselves yet

Hmmm, maybe the "jokes" could wait until folks have found out that their friends and family are safe?

Sorry Lou, wasn't meaning any disrepect at all - you'd have to be pretty thin-skinned to take what I submitted as in any way disrespectful.

Indeed, the day 'the jokes' stop or we lose our abiility to laugh in the face of adversity is the day they've won. How do you think the Eastenders got through the Blitz? It's not like I'd done a contemporary update of the Mountbatten/Head-n-Shoulders joke, is it?

Bren, not arguing with you on this thread - I just think that lighthearted "Glibert and Sullivan" punishment musings are probably better on another thread until the full story is out.

Fair comment - apologies if I've made inappropriate comments or upset anyone.
