| 12 things... Not all 'things, but what is good about BRITAIN, not just the bit South of the border. Sorry the Scots half kicked in momentarily... 1] Unarmed police. Scared yesterdays lunch out of me when I saw armed officers walking around London. 2] Patriotism. In the 'Will defend my country and it's values', not the BNP and racist way. 3] Freedom [ish] of speech. This appears to be going down hill rapidly. But at least this forum is still free. 4] Single Malt Whisky. Oh yes. 5] Cider. For getting Americans drunk. After all it is only made from apples, isn't it? 6] Scapa Flow. 7] Sheer bloody mindedness. From that chap who spent years sitting outside Parliament protesting to feats of endurance and thinking that we can still win the world cup [can of worms anyone?], we do try harder, even if we come second. 8] Inventiveness. We have invented some good stuff in the past, and there will no doubt be more to come. 9] Welcoming in foreign citizens. On the wane a bit now [see 2], but we used to and hopefully will be able to again. 10] Sense of humour. You bloody well need it. 11] The weather. After all what else would we talk about? 12] British Divers. The bravest, barmiest and best in the world! |

| is this forum broken? There I was reading the first post in the thread. "Aah", I think to myself, " I can see where this one's going!" So I scroll down to read all the posts bemoaning the outrageous waste of public money and what do I see FFS? You're all joining in! I can see a justification for this sort of exercise - if it's being done by the BBC - makes a good programme. But a website set up by a government department?? Am i the only one who thinks this is barmy? (Just to make it clear - I'm as happy as anyone else to debate which icons are the best, just not sure why the government are doing this)

The Icons Online project will be officially launched today by David Lammy, the Culture Minister. He will say that his own favourite symbol of England is the red telephone box. But it has not made it into the initial top 12, chosen by a panel of advisers from the arts and academia. Unlike St George, however, it does feature on a supplementary list suggested by other contributors, which includes Wallace and Gromit, York Minster, apple crumble, and Zippy from the children's TV show Rainbow. The symbols will focus only on England, rather than Britain as a whole, because of a belief that the country has lost out in terms of identity in recent years to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. There is your answer - and I wonder who would be to blame for that?????
