Sounds like its one of the dealer fit alarms, there a nightmare, get it removed - its an hours work. The car has a transponder immobiliser fitted as standard from the factory which makes it almost unstealable - so the alarm's superfluous really anyway.

The most economical way to run any car is into the ground - passats are normally very durable and reliable.

Without knowing what model it is - its worth something in the region of £1500 on a trade in so it'll be a fair old gap to bridge if you go for something new.

Passats are terrific estate cars and you would pick one up for not a huge amount of money - they're good value just now. If you get another one - get the 1.9 tdi 110 /130 bhp - its a fantastic engine - every bit as quick as the petrols and 55 mpg on a run, which with regular stoney and vobster trips helps no end with the old wallet.

Call me if you ever want advice on cars - its what I do

At least the KISS hasn't got a f*ckin alarm on it! :-)

Hope the auto electrician managed to sort it.

If not - found this online!!

"I had a similar problem with a -95 Passat and it took a while to figure
out the reason, but
here it is:

The alarm goes off when the alarm system 'restarts' after getting the
battery voltage back. This requires, of course, that the system has been
without power for some time. You can easily see/hear this happen if you
disconnect and then reconnect the battery cable after a few minutes (at
least in a -95 Passat).

So it's likely something makes your alarm system to lose the battery
voltage, or the voltage may drop to level that's too low for the system.
Here's your checklist:

0. Check your battery voltage. If your battery is old and your radiator
fan stays on after you stop the engine, the voltage may eventually drop
below the allowed limit (don't ask me what it is). After the fan stops
and the battery regains some voltage ... off goes the alarm.
1. Check your battery connectors.
2. Check that all fuses are properly in place, push them all the way in
and make sure they stay there. Some (or one) of the fuses pass power to
the alarm system. In my car the vibration from driving on cobblestone
roads was enough to shake some of them loose - not to fall on the floor
but to be unreliable enough to trigger the alarm, typically at night.
Some of my neighbours still keep reminding me of that.

If you cannot spot the problem, there's always the last resort:
disconnect the alarm horn. Removing any of the fuses doesn't help,
there's apparently no fuse to it. So you have to find the horn, in a -95
it's in the front right hand size wheelwell under the plastic mudguard.
Takes about 10 mins to do it. Good luck."

Best check that if you disarm the alarm that it does not affect your insurance, as I think you will find that it will do.

The Reikimaster wins a prize.

I took it to the garage yesterday, and they are 90% sure it's a faulty bonnet switch. I'm going to get it fixed next week, but in the meantime they disabled the siren for me.

Top marks to Howard for recommending Mastertechs in S. London - they're an independent VW / Audi specialist and seem to know their onions.

Why disable the siren - jumper the switch. Then the alarm will still work and if it goes off again it is not the bonnet switch. Saves buying a switch to find out that's not the cause.
