What do you need car seats for, if they're that big just fold down the seats and chuck em in the back.

Wait, you do mean your cylinders don't you!?

also only joking, but still very teed off with blatant profiteering by carseat manufacturers!
Of course the car seats manufacturers are going to advise never to buy 2nd hand seats, it will put them out of business. But surely you are not believing that advertising pressure are you???

unless you can guarantee the seat has never been in an accident then there are extremely good reasons for not buying secondhand. A seat may have been damaged/stressed in an accident which may/can cause problems in any future accidents.

In 2003 a taxi drove into the back of my car trashing it quite badly , the seat saved my daughter from injury .The seat didnt look damaged but without X-raying the seat there was no way of knowing if it was damaged and that was a chance I didn't want to take.

Steve (married to a very fertile lady).

Just a thought

Hmm, last year I remember seeing some roadshows done by the National Safety Council - mainly aimed at poorly fitted seats if anything - but maybe they might be worth approaching if you do consider the second hand route?

PS - No kids, so not coming from a place of experience
