"I know i dont drive, but that is hardly the point here."
Sorry, but I think that might be the point. Speed humps are generally a pain in the arse and they do knacker your car and they do cost a lot of money - your money from your council tax. There are many different methods of traffic calming and a discussion on which are the best is useful.

"Weigh all that stuff on the website against the one life a speed bump may save."

This type of argument really pisses me off. We could save a lot more lives if we reduced all speed limits to 20mph. Even more if we cut it down to 10. Actually, think how many lives would be saved if we banned all motor transport (that includes buses for those who don't drive!).
What we need are sensible measures that work in the real world.

Suggesting a spike in cars is just very very stupid. If that were used, then my sister would be dead now through no fault of her own. Grow up.

Actually, that is entirely the point!

My street is littered with these humps and bumps - they have enough money to build them, but not enough to fill in the potholes right behind them.

The fact is: Speedbumps do NOT slow down the people who go racing through the streets. Those people who drive responsibly do so in any case, and those who drive like nutters are not deterred by a lump in the road.

I happen to have a very lowslung car. On some of these bl**dy things, even if I virtually crawl over those humps, I hear the giant crunch as it hits my underside, or the nose of my car dips into the tarmac. The only way to avoid it in some cases is to drive in the middle off the road so that I have both wheels on parallel bumps. How's that for road safety!!

When my exhaust comes off, I WILL sue the council, and am within my rights to do so. It's got naff all to do with not wanting to slow down for the sake of saving lives. Speed bumps do not save lives, they just p*ss off drivers, probably adding significantly to road rage.

Put them in a town near here last year. Gone demented with them. Average coastguard and lifeboat response times have now increased by a little over 4 minutes. It takes how long to drown ?

IMHO speed bumps are pretty useless, they don't deter people who are going to break the speed limit, and they annoy people who would have obeyed the limit anyway.
2 of the examples that I can think of are :-
1) residents of a local village complain that people drive to fast and speed bumps are put in. the speed bumps are so high that one is lowered after lorries keep getting stranded on it. The locals went out and bought 4X4's, and when a speed trap was put in the villiage 80% of those caught lived in the village!
2) the road behind my house (nice and straight 30mph limit, 2 speed camera's, nothing in the way of accidents) had speed bumps put in a year ago. the only accident that has happened since then was someone hit a
tree at over 70mph and managed to kill themselves (obviously the speed bumps slowed him down!).

Whilst I feel that speed bumps are pointless, there are other traffic calming measures that work. And I support there use where necessary.

Simon A

So here we are in New Zealand - max speed on motorways 100km per hour. Speed cameras everywhere. thousands of tickets issued, speed bumps and targeted persecution of the motorist under the guise of "speed kills". Only 4 million people and yet the death rate here is higher proportionately than Germany where there are areas with no speed restrictions at all - Go figure!!
Alternatively look to everyone taking responsibility for their actions and their own safety rather than task loading the driver as the ONLY one with a resposibility to watch out and act in a safe manner on behalf of everyone else.

Few - that feels better - anyone coming down the pub then?
