"Diving is for everyone"

Sorry, but it just isn't.

There are various medical conditions which mean you can't dive. These people will most likely never dive, and they shouldn't. It could easily do them in.

At the same time there are personalities which shouldn't dive. Unfortunately it's much harder to diagnose a complete fecking idiot than a heart or lung problem, but they should be identified and branded as such so I can steer well clear.

Or people who hide the fact they are totally unsuitable to learn to dive or even be near a boat, because they want to be at one with the water. These people could well end up at one with the water before they had planned.

There are also a large number of people who should accept that while playing on a 10m reef in the Red Sea on a single tank is perfectly ok for them, they don't really have a place strapping on 25 tanks and swimming off 2km into a cave or dropping 150m onto a wreck.

Anyway, that's about me for a rant. I just feel that diving is a sport a lot of people can enjoy, but it isn't for "everyone".

Of course, I consider myself to be someone who is allowed to do any kind of diving they like and have a natural aptitude for these things. Because I can, and this is my thread, and because I'm an arrogant wanker.

Digs. God that felt good.

"Cycling is for everyone"

All your arguments can be used for many sports or passtimes, for instance I can bimble around [and fall off] my push bike, but I'd never win the Tour de France.

Best not dive with me, I'm the biggest f-wit in the water. Just ask Ratty!

You've not quite understood speakers corner have you Phil? You're not supposed to wind me up, just help me rant!

Did you drop off the spools? Had an idea and could do with the bit of webbing that slides onto the waist band from the torch can. If you know what I mean. The 2 bits of webbing sewn together. Could do with one of those too. Might well drop in next Sat morning, could pick things up then if you're about, or save you dropping off/posting.

Digs.

And as a result I don't ride bikes. Because I can't be the best at it Nor do I apply to joint he Tour de France, and act all put out when I don't get in. In the same way a lot of people are never going to dive some sites, so they'd be best making out like they didn't want to, save face.

Same in any sport that has the potential to get into very dangerous situations fairly easily. Just look at some of the call outs any mountain rescue service gets over a winter.

People over-estimate their own abilities generally and manufacturers sell the lifestyle.

And then when things screw up everybody says "this bit of kit failed" or "that happened which caused it". Very rarely does anyone say "he f**ked up". The vast majority of the "problematic" situations that I've found myself in have been of my own creation. I hope that if I ever shuffle off underwater then someone has the decency to say "what a tit" and doesn't blame Gordon Smith's excellent engineering for my screw ups.

Phil, that's basically it. It's an inherent belief I have that arrogance is a virtue, and as a result that all other divers should model themselves in my image. I also feel that I have the right to say "Quite frankly, if they were a better f'in diver..." but that it shouldn't be said about me after my untimely death. Obviously.

By the way, in case anyone thinks I mean all this, and that I'm an arrogant wanker for real, you're right. I am.
