The Silent majority of YDers ... Speak Up! Hi Firstly this post is aimed at YDers with less than 50 posts but specifically at those have never posted. I would appreciate if the old hands would not post in the thread because I am genuinely trying to understand why people join YD but then don't post. So if you are a new YDer or a longer term "quiet" YDer, can you explain why you don't post regularly or not at all? If you'd rather PM me then that would be fine. Thanks in advance Mal

I have been a member for a few years and even now have only a few posts. This isn't because I'm not interested. In fact, I would go to say that I log on most days to check out the latest. Some people are talkers and some are listeners and I am mainly of the latter type. I do realise that if every member was a 'listener' type then there wouldn't be anything for us to listen to. As yorkshire divers has lots of people more than eager to post then I am quite happy to browse and lurk or whatever. If I have anything to add or reply to a post then I will do so but I don't ever think I will get up to the dizzy heights of some of the posters. I do dive quite a bit for my age and enjoy it, unfortunately where I live is a distance from the sea and I am happy to dive more frequently in salt free water. I just like the sensation of being underwater and don't really care what type it is. Some posters see quarry diving as not real diving and that rattles me a bit. Don't want to get into rucks about what is or isn't diving either. Yorkshire Divers is an excellent site with lots of interesting disussions. Long may it reign. Cheers Lyv

Well, I guess I fall into the 'not a lot to say' category. I joined YD mainly to read about diving techniques, bits of kit I've not seen, places I've not been to, etc. Basically to learn through other people experiences, and maybe share my own. If I wasn't a member of an active club, then I'd also be looking for buddy's trips etc.

Listner Like the others above, I only post if I feel I have something add. I log on frequently but usually someone has already responded in a fashion that reflects my views, so no point in repeating. TonyG

Mal I'm pretty new to this diving lark ( about 85 dives ) and use YD as a resource to help me with kit purchases and the like. I think there are probably a load of people like me who like to reseach specific kit / techniques etc but arent particularly interested in regularly posting. Occasionally ( very occasionally as you can see from my total number of posts! ) I reply to a post if I think I can genuinly help someone. However, 99 times out of 100 there is someone better qualified to offer advise to people. Hopefully, as my diving progresses I'll post more on YD as I will feel more confortable that my advise is based on experience ( as opposed to "knowledge" based on t'internet diving ). I've just moved from London to Bournemouth and have already used YD to speak to a few locals and join a club. PS - I also log into YD as there are a few people who regularly make me spill my tea because I am laughing so much ( some at them, some with them )Dave

| Looks like there's a common thread here.. I'm exactly the same. I use the forum mainly for research, as the advice is bound to wide & varied.. but when there's a very common answer on say, a piece of kit, then it's safe to say it's worth buying etc. I even bought a Frog Wing from here which I love.. so so far, so good! | Lack of posts Just use it to organise diving so other posts are limited. If I believe I have something to offer on a particular topic then I'll put fingers to keys...otherwise lurking is the order of the day |
