sorry mark confusion, what i intended to say was, how do the contractors know when they will make money from recovering a vehicle? do they have access to the insurance database or do they recover based on info supplied by the police
and is the recovery firm routinely notified of the stolen vehicles location before the owner/insurance company?

also as you guys now have anpr and in car access to insurance and mot records since the computerised mot came in, i find it almost impossible to keep a tax disc on my windscreen so i leave it at home most of the time, am i exposing myself to being recovered and charged by the contractors? its always taxed in summer but sorn in winter?
thanks for your patience

If you get a anally retentive official you may get a fine for failing to display a valid licence. even if the car is taxed you must display the disc. £400 fine I think.
