As a boss there is a time to be friendly and I time to be A Bastard. Ww have one employee who is a lazy tw@t- we've given him lots of friendly verbal warnings but hes still a lazy tw@t, skiving off in the bogs texting his mates etc. So now we have no choice but to go down the disciplinary procedure route.

One thing that being an employer has taught me is get everything down in writing in a contract and follow your precedures to the letter. Don't do anything on "handshakes" or take rash decisions on the spur of the moment.

In Chasey's case he has a pretty clear cut case for an employee being negligent and financially affecting the company. In this case you go straight down the disciplinary procedure and don't dick about.

What ever happened to getting references for potential employees and tenants (or even go as far as to rent out to employed only)?

(Ok, will probably need to get around the 'false reference' thing, as this is a crazy world we live in?)

It's not a question of getting indignant about their tax dodging or other nefarious activities, that's their business; it's simply an opportunity to do them over quite legally by getting the authorities to do your dirty work for you. It's revenge, pure and simple - I don't mind admitting it. As the law prohibits you from paying rough men to go round and do them over, or even doing it yourself, something like this is simply the next best thing.

Well we did get references; the Real Estate Agent who managed our house recommended them to us as previous "good tenants". (or at least they recommended her). They were put on a nationwide real estate property management blacklist after that, so hopefully no other home owners have suffered them, or at least no one renting decent houses through reputable property managers.
