I don't see the issue in a ticket being for a specific total weight.

Body and luggage combined.

If you're built like a lamppost then by all means make it up with luggage. If however you're Shamus nearest land dwelling relative you may take up all that weight just squeezing your enormous figure into a seat.

Seems fair to me - punishes nobody, everybody gets the same weight for same price.

But still cannot say 'oi, I don't fancy sitting next to muffin-top over here', as you KNOW that you've got a long flight sat next to someone who is going to spill over their armrests!

And yes, it happened years back on one of my jaunts back home (14 hour flight). Couldn't move as freely, and winded up with one of my calves so sore I thought I had DVT (it turned out to be a bad case of stiff and sore muscles as legs were cramping up on the flight!). The pain lasted almost a week and my trip ruined, as had family worried and wasn't able to go to places I wanted to go, as couldn't walk very far.

So the American idea is good - if someone obviously needs 2 seats, then they pay for 2 seats.
