So I get a phone call from a company who went bust a couple of years ago then started trading again immediately under a different director. Owed me 5 grand. They wanted some backup and support for the bit of kit they had.

Hahahahahahaha I took great relish in telling them we would be happy to give them support if they stump up the cash. Plus a bit extra for the interest too while you are at it.

On a serious note, you might have been better off negotiating a price + 10% until you've got your £5k back ............ if they were amenable to that.

If you are unlikely to get the money, shouldn't you have played dumb, got the job and then let them down in some big way ......... if possible. Any form of retribution that would cost them ................?

I would have made them fill out credit reference. Asked them for extra
paperwork, then stalled the order.

Next I'd say that the spares were lost or send them the wrong (and any old
tat) parts and ask for a return before you resend the right ones.

In fact see how long you can be the most inept firm going, but never send
them the actual bits they need.

Noooo you're all getting totally the wrong idea. There is nothing as irritating as dealing with a polite, efficient company who is being perfectly reasonable when you know you are totally in the wrong.

It's exactly the same as speeding w@nkers on the motorway who come belting up behind you when you are overtaking someone, have nowhere to go and are already doing 80 anyway and they flash their lights and drive right on your bumper. So you slow down to 1 mph faster than the car you are overtaking. Incredibly irritating to the w@nker behind.

Happened to me once on the A52 coming out of Nottingham when some idiot came screaming up behind a line of cars on a single carriageway all doing just over the speed limit. Drove right on my bumper and he ended up undertaking everyone on the next roundabout forcing the line to stop while he screeched round the outside. At the next lights he had to stop and we all caught up with him which was very nice as it gave everyone a chance to show their appreciation in a "Gareth hunt Nescafe" way so he screeched off spinning his wheels like an idiot leaving a fog of blue smoke and headed off like a greyhound out of a gate.

Oh how we all laughed as we drove past him 1/2 a mile later after being pulled up by a police car he failed to notice in a side road. I believe the whole line of cars drove past, beeped their horns and waved.
