Thier customer service has go to be the WORST I have ever had the misfortune to experience.

For instance

Is it to much to ask them to give a bit of advice on buying equipment (from them) and information on a course (Also with them)

I emailed them and got absolutly NOTHING!

Previously (When I was doing an OPEN WATER Course) I also emailed them and got the same lack of any response at all. I even posted a message on thier website and finnaly got a response.

The response was that they where having problems with thier email which I know sometimes happens but I ask you would this still be a problem 3 months later?? I think the answer is NO!

I even poped down to thier shop one Saturday, stood around for about 10 minutes trying to get a reaction from thier staff but they all seemed a little to busy chatting amongst them selves to help me spen some money on a set of new equipment.

Summary of service
_______________

P!55 poor if you ask me

Anybody else suffering from rec-n-tec itis?
Hi Ian, welcome to YD.
I used Rec n Tec when they were part of the Mike's group (2001) and traded under a different name to buy my first set of kit, they gave me great advise, however it seemed to go downhill after that.

Oddly enough I was also in there on Saturday, getting an SPG. They are an odd bunch, sometimes it feels like a club environment and they couldnt be more helpful, sadly though more often than not it feels like a club and you're not a member. They were running a course on Saturday so I expect service wasnt anywhere near as good as it sometimes is. The guy that was running it in 2001 has left but his then number two is now running it, he's actually a really nice bloke, but your complaint is by no means isolated in my experience. Shame really as they have a potential big market if the shop in Luton closes, as it looks like it will (Deepdive), run by divers for divers, they have some real history in there with their service guy. There is also a shop on the way to Watford (Croxley divers - they seem pretty good)

Matt

Tim and Pete at Croxley divers are really nice guys. They do all their own servicing and testing, and give good, accurate fills. They keep a fair bit of kit and can get other stuff in. And they do training as well. I've used them for a number of years and trust them with all my testing etc.

I've been to Rec n' Tec, and also when it was Mikes, and had slightly offhand, disinterested service both times. If I'd had a rebreather, I got the impression I'd have had a bit more interest. I haven't been back since, Croxley is so much nicer.

I use Rec-N-Tec for fills testing and buying the odd shiny bit that I need. I have to say that they have been very polite and helpfull. I'm a bit wary of diving with them since I heard about this. HSE issues warning to recreational dive companies following ... OK I know it was only paperwork but still you can't be too carefull

Thats a bit silly not complying to an improvement notice! You sort of think they got what they deserved there, You just don't mess with the HSE, they were lucky to get an improvement notice the first time, but to do it again.... beyond belief!

I have met the Rec-N-Tec bods, they all seemed like a good bunch of guys and girls, can't comment on the store though as I've never used them.

Thanks Matt I will give them a try they can't much worse and by all accounts sound like a good alternative to rec-n-tec.

At the time of the incident I was using them and did a UK familiarisataion 2 day course with them (at Stoney), they seemed a bit slack on paperwork etc but OK in the water, it was this I believe that led to them getting a slap. Andy (Abery, not the present Andy) explained they did comply with what they thought they had to, but the HSE disagreed, hence the prosecution. TBH by then I had become a bit disappointed with them so never took my training (with them) any further. They also had someone die I think when being trained by them but it was a heart attack and they were held to be blameless, that precluded the HSE stuff and I suspect it was that which made the HSE look at their dive plans and backup (if memory serves me correctly).
