Everyone else - As for fly-tipping. This needs to be reported to your local council, unless its a massive amount or appears to contain hazardous materials or is in a river / stream - in this case report it to the environment agency. As for tyres - these are banned at landfill under the landfill regulations unless they are bicycle tyres or have an outside diamter of more than 1400mm - as of 16th July 2006. Shredded tyres can be accepted at landfill and used as an engineering material - they are used as a drainage blanket to collect leachate from the landfill site. The reasons for the ban are to encourage tyre recycling, prevent emissions of dangerous substances into raw landfill gas and groundwater and to reduce the risk of landfill fires. The problem of course is that tyre recycling facilities aren't exactly common so fly-tipping occurs. Garages / service centres are being encouraged to retain tyres they remove for customers and take them to shredders / recyclers. Cant believe I'm talking work on this forum and during lunch!!! ![]() |

| What about my skip? I paid £220 for it plus £40 to LBRUT to leave it in the road , and before we could fill it, passers-by were putting old TV sets, microwave ovens and sacks of garden waste in it. I almost turned into Richard Wilson! I don't believe it!

| A pet hate of mine and before I retired from the Police 17 years ago I would always check out the rubbish abandoned at the roadside or on the moors. It was surprising how often people left an address amongst the rubbish and I took a number of folk to court over the years. At this time the local tip was open 24/7 so there was no excuse. There are also some misconceptions as well that lead to dumping. Beginning of the year I clambered onto the house roof in high winds to repair a small leak and yes the inevitable happened and was was blown off falling through the asbestos garage roof. We removed the sheets intact toghter with the debris and put it on the front lawn prior to contacting the local council for advice. I wish I had a pound for everyone who passed by took a sharp intake of breath and said either 'you will have problems getting rid of that' or similar. In the event I was told it must be double wrapped in thick polythene sheet and taped up and I must make an appointment with the main waste disposal depot at Huddersfield. This I did and took the lot down in my trailer. When we got there it was inspected we had to do all the handling ourselves which was fair enough and put it in a special large skip - no hassle and no charge.
