Can I turn this into a rant thread?

As a safe cyclist who always stops at red lights.......

Here in Weymouth we have several cycle paths (and psychopaths also)
Said cycle paths have nice pictures of bicycles painted at regular intervals on one side of the path and pictures of a large and small pedestrian walking on the other side of the path.

Even people who can't read can recognise a picture. "you walk here" and "you cycle here"

Every day, I have to slam my brakes on due to pedestrians walking on the bike bit. God forbid I tinkle my bell. What dirty looks I get. And they don't move. And I end up saying "sorry" because I am polite.

SOME (certainly not all) people are just thick and nasty.

That is my rant du jour over.

Thank you.

Sooo tempted to wind down a window and shout to the kids, "look where you're going because cars hurt alot when they hit you!" whenever the non-observant ones decide to play chicken!

this all boils down to a good up bringing ,,,you were taught to respect others as well as your self these days kids have respect for nothin not even for each other as they goad one another to step out in front of the on coming car or take their first drink which normally ends in more serious anti social behaviour as they reach their teens.
and while they are young and throwing all over the floor the contents on the shelfs of their local super market store mother walks up who was not watching them at all and says "stop that its naughty be a good boy for mummy"

sorry rant over coat got

I posted this on another forum a couple of days ago:

Some time ago there was a (Government sponsored) road safety TV advert. It featured the ghost of a woman who was shouting at the distraught driver of a car who had just hit and (presumably) killed her. He was saying "she just appeared in front of me" or words to that effect and her "ghost" retorted "if you cannot stop in time then you are going too fast". Thereby laying the blame firmly at drivers for all pedestrian accidents.
I remember scoffing at the time thinking that it sent out the wrong message as it removes the responsibility on pedestrians.
I didn't think people would actually take that message on board though

So our own authorities have told us - don't worry, it's always tha car drivers fault!

and they are right, if you cannot stop in time you are going too fast.

at 40mph 80% of accidents are a seriuos injury/fatality
at 30 mph this reduces to about 50%
at 20mph 80% of accidents are minor injury.

think if it was your child and you see it in a different light.

Me I was hit by a car when i was 9
March 1982 at 4.50 pm on a tuesday evening, when I looked there was no car coming, and the range of vision was well over 100metres. I survived with no major injuries, the police didnt have sophisticated equipment to work out the drivers speed so did a test on a similar car to see how fast he was going, they got to 48mph over the same distance assuming the driver was travelling at 30 in the run up to where you stop being able to see the road.

so yes if you cant stop you are going too fast.

Hmm, I have to agree with this. I am usually a very careful cyclist but the only time I have run red lights on my bike was with the local cycling club. There were about 20 of us, I had no idea where we were going, they were travelling so fast I could barely keep up anyway, if I'd stopped for the lights when they didn't I'd have been well and truely lost.

It scared me silly and I haven't been out with them since, I'm sticking with the triathlon club who (at least my local one) obey traffic signals and wait for you at the tops of hills!

As a cyclist I would ask drivers to bear in mind though, racing bikes can be travelling faster than you expect, the riders are clipped into them (so can't brake very sharply without falling off) and the slightest bump, manhole cover or piece of debris in the road will jolt the bike badly so please give us space when you overtake, don't cut us up at junctions or open car doors into us!

As for people crossing roads without looking, very very irritating both as a driver and a cyclist, although drivers who turn into side roads without checking for people crossing them are just as annoying.

what is annoying as a driver is the twots using ipods who dont bother to look and just cross without a back glance to check its clear.
