And when we have all worked harder, then the rest of us can all go off with stress...
We've got about half a dozen people off with stress at the moment at my place.

Well, I can only speak from my experience.

I've had at 15-20% increase in personal workload year on year since 2003.

I'm the only person who does my job in the west of Scotland. My oppos in Edinburgh have two people in the role for a smaller population area.

In addition to my role I have to cover for junior officers when there's not enough of them, unlike my Edinburgh oppos who have their own office and are shielded enough to concentrate on what their supposed to do. Which means I end up answering telephone calls from loonies like Miss "I'm not mad, honestly" Walls or doing ludicrous searches for derelict cottages in Argyll for white-settlers who want something to do up (that'll be three hours of search time to tell them it's an estate title, meanwhile MY work piles up). AND urgent calls from Fraud Squad wanting an addresss NOW because there's three vans of policemen waiting to raid a place and they think the warrant is wrong.

I also have cretinous senior officers WHO DON'T UNDERSTAND THE LAW undermining my authority with absurd letters to agents.

I also have no-one covering my leave, so if I go on holiday, none of my work gets done. BUT I have a ministerial target to deal with all enquiries within eight working days. So if I wan't to go on holiday, I have a choice, take a week and then work 12 hour days to clear the backlog within the target or take a fortnight, miss my target and get a reduced pay rise (if I get one at all).

But when I go off sick with stress (1) People say I'm taking the piss and (2) My managers have to get TWO people in to replace me.

I've noticed a correlation between those who are incompetent at their jobs and those who scam the system well.

Anybody else noticed it?

but just to throw another log on the fire isn't the problem caused by the company and it's policy, which enables people to take the piss, as people have said change the policy to make it worse with (if you morals cant handle it) a exception clause for serous illness

It isn't necessarily the company policy. Most of them have a restriction which means that sick pay will only be paid of a doctors note is provided. Therefore, no sicknote, no SSP or employer sickpay. The ease with which people can get a sicknote is the problem.

Dismissal for non-attendance at work is not unfair, provided the correct procedures are followed. Lots of Local Authorities have policies which wll end up with dismissal after about a year of dodgy attendance, longer for non- attendance with a lengthy illness.

They don't have time to do their jobs properly because they spend it researching employment law.

For the short time that I was signing on, I did not have time to 'work the system', I'm sure I could have got a lot more however I just did not have the knowledge of the professional unemployed.
