What about those of us who are self employed - no sickness benefit, no-one to do our work for us and no sympathy - boo, hoo!! I'm waiting for the "Ahhhh!"

But, even headmisstresses get caught out, one was in the paper recently who pulled s sickie to bugger off to the canaries, claiming she'd had a call from a friend who was apparently seriously ill and she just had to go to help her. Or something like that. She probably broke a finger nail.

yup thats very true, I only got basic stuff when I signed on years ago, until I started 'job club' then I learnt how to milk the system - not for very long though as job club did what its supposed to get you back to work.

We had a woman in our clerical pool who was off on long term stress leave when someone else spotted her working in the local chippy. When they started disciplinary proceedings she went to the doctor who wrote her a note saying that work in the chippy was theraputic for her stress and so the action was dropped.

Working for the civil service we get 6 months sick pay in any year but no more than 1 year accumulated in any 4. Stress in ever example that I have seen lasts for exactly 6 months. The prospect of SSP always cures it!

Currently working for a project redesigning the sickness benefit system (currently incapacity benefit). I've got enough knowledge now to really really screw the taxpayer for a lot of money.
I'm available for a small fee.....

I run a small business, well very small with just another employee at the moment. I take a very firm hand with employees after bad experience in the past. If they want time off and it's convenient then normally that is OK with me. BUt any screwing around then they get a formal notice - 3 of those then you are sacked. I'm sorry but it's my money that is being stolen, and yes it is theft and immoral. To compensate I think I'm a OK boss and just ask them to be truthful. I now run everything by the book but I am fair.
