Just a point here if you loose an SMB you should report it to the police and coast guard.

last year in Weymouth the chopper and RNLI were scrambled because one was found drifting.

As for the insurance company's they will always ask for a 3rd party to confirm as it stops false claims

Which is why they asked for the names of my buddies on the claim form and they could have had the names of at least another 6 YDers.

A skipper is more likely to be truthful as mates and fellow divers, will and do lie for you!

Police or Coast Guard would be a good idea.

let's put it the other way you found an SMB with a reel attached but no diver would you inform them so they could make a descision as to if there was a missing diver?

My SMB has my parents phone number on it I'd hate for them to get a call stating your son may be dead we found his SMB drifting in the middle of the english channel.

The coast guard/police/DDRC are all the same giving them a call is not wasting their time and any info they have is either apreciated or not concidered wasting their time.

No,but i would have reported it to the local CG Station .

1. It would have been logged if a sighting was reported in by a member of the public, which maybe stop asearch for a missing diver.

2. The CG would have a logged of it in the LOST & FOUND log.

3. Maybe the insurance company would phone the CG to get a date & time of the report of a lost item .

When I was in Lyme the local CG wandered up to me and asked if any of us had lost a SMB. A yatch had picked one up and reported it.

I asked if it had a name on it.

"Yes" he said.

"Buddy"

I hope this information helps other then, because this is the first time I have heard of this and it might be a good idea for skippers to know this information so they can advise people.

That reminds me of when that yacht hit the Eddystone a few years ago skippered by a bloke who knew sod all and his missus:

Woo-man: Help help help we're sinking
CG: Where are you?
Woo-man: I don't know
CG: DO you have GPS?
Woo-man: I think so my husband is down below bailing
CG: Just read off what it says on your instruments
Woo-man: GARMIN we're at GARMIN
