Well....people still use their mobiles blatantly (yes I'm guilty too) so making it illegal will make no difference because there aren't any police to enforce the law anyway

People carried on driving without seatbelts for years after the law on that changed. Some cretins still do, but the majority use them now. Drinking and driving was very common and the police virtually turned a blind eye, but you're a pariah if you do it now.

It takes time for things like this to seep into the national conciousness, but they do eventually.

I and many others have been arguing for legislation outlawing the smacking of children for years, but the main argument put up by the Government is that it would be almost impossible to police. That shouldn't matter; what they would be doing is sending out a message that it's no longer acceptable. Eventually people would take notice.

True, the number of mobile-using drivers has not diminished since the law changed. In fact, could I be right in suspecting that the number of wrongdoers has actually increased?

It does annoy me when I see lorry drivers trying to negotiate their way round roundabouts or at a junction with only one hand to work that enormous steering wheel. And they always look like they're struggling.

I'd have to argue against you on this one. I have two kids. My daughter I have never ever had to smack but my son is another matter for the most part he's one of the best behaved kids I know but sometimes he does stuff which put him in danger of getting seriously hurt and ignores you when you tell him not to and the only way he responds is with a smack. I myself would only take notice of something if I thought I might get a whack. People are individuals you have to find what encourages and discourages certain behaviours so I for one would oppose a ban on smacking.
