| Speakers' Corner: Discuss Anyone still think ID Cards and a National Identity Database will be a good idea? in the Non-Diving Related Forums forums: Apparently password protected but NOT encrypted. The person who posted this needs to be shot resurrected and then shot again. ... |

| Erm preventing access to the file!!!!!!!!! Encryption is something entirely different. Difference between putting a lock on a box and putting a lock on the box and then hiding it some where safe. If password protection were enough to guard anything there would be no need for encryption software.

| apparently it was actually posted about 5 weeks ago, not noticed missing for 3 weeks and they've been crapping themselves for two weeks looking under keyboards. What a bunch of dicks, on the tele they claimed that it could potentially include anyones details that are currently claiming child benefit. |

Yes certain stuff you could password protect without encrypting (logging into Windows, for example), but a database? Never come across any like that myself, but I could be missing some... David |

| No, the goverment can get to fuck, though if you have an internet connection, bank account, credit card, car, mobile phone or a life then they already have all the info they need about what you do, what you buy, who you talk too, what you say and what you look at anyway so who cares, and if you do then become a skint hermit. Don't kid yourself, if they need to know about you, then they already do. |

| don't panic, the missing disks have been found: Find Two CD-R's - Have data on them - some sort of database on eBay within, Other, Everything Else (end time 28-Nov-07 08:01:11 GMT) Mike

David, What's the problem? the data in whatever format / data base etc, was password protected but NOT encripted....simple statement... it may be a storm in a tea cup, it could be sat in some ones draw or some scum bag has gotten hold of it and a lot of people are in deep doo doo (potentially), most likely we shall never know.

| I've heard several reasons for this blunder from poorly trained staff to lack of staff, well that does ring true as that is the same situation with Immigration now. All the changes the Government keeps on about with the new borders agency have resulted in the important items like:- Employing enough staff to do the job and make sure they are correctly trained to do it. being dropped in favour of putting us in a uniform, which apparently will solve the issue. HMRC are in the same situation as us, waiting to be merged together despite having nothing in common about what we are looking for and how we are looking for it. The only thing in common is we work at the countries borders. A typical example is that they will not allow sufficient training to be done, as a part trained officer at work is far cheaper than a fully trained and competent one who has done some continuation training. I, like several thousand other officers have just had to change all my perfectly serviceable freight searching kit (Several hundred pounds worth each) to get a new set which is now labeled Border and Immigration Agency instead of UK Immigration Service, will anyone notice? We don't even know the difference ouselves. But a few weeks after i get that guess what? The Government announce we are to be called the Border Agency!!! not Border and Immigration Agency WTF so more wasted money getting another new set of kit They are interested in one thing only, looking good on the surface, no matter that underneath the surface things are rotten to hell. A bottom line also, if this stuff is so classified how come any old junior member of staff can download the lot in the first place?
