It is an absolute disgrace but sadly not a new thing, several weeks after I had my accident a kind lady complained to the Manager of my local supermarket saying that I shouldn't be allowed in like that [external fixator and newish skin grafts] as I had upset her children and put her off buying food as she felt sick.

The Manager knew me and asked her if she knew how I had come to be injured, to which she replied ''yes and what has that got to do with it''?

The women concerned should be named & shamed and hopefully ostracised by the rest of the community, and banned from the leisure centre.

Safe diving,
Steve

Yes. Wouldn't it be nice if the useless newspapers did something like that - interview them and ask why they are such arseholes? So much nicer than making up lies about East Europeans.

I dread to think what the psychological effect the abuse these soldiers got will have on them. I suspect the main reason the Instructors packed up and went was because they are very aware of this and the problem they will be having coming to terms with their injuries.

I agree with you there Paul,,,,

Also shows great respect to the instructors in keeping their cool and not leading to a slanging match in the eyes of good caring members of the public.

Whats more of a pity, is that the disabled soldiers could be a icon to the sports world and others in getting into a water sport / swimming and get England some more medals at the disabled games.

Like Steve ( in a way ) disrespect was also shown like this to my dad after his stroke when using the Dover swimming pool , when he was lowered into the pool with thier special hoist for disabled people. He has never been swimming again since that sad moment 7 years ago ...... however, respect wasn't shown to the 3 lads after they got out the pool and NO it wasn't one of our family members that hurt them .

Thanks for that.

Interesting comment from the council

I'm pretty sure we have lots of legislation regarding what may or may not be said. What these people said may well be covered by it.

I have been reading these posts with interest. I am disgusted but not surprised by the attitude of these people. I was brought up in the army where my dad did his 22 years service whenever we where stationed in army quarters in civilian areas we where always treated with almost contempt by the civvy's in the area . One particularly area was when the battalion moved from duty in malta to parkwood in kent. As children we where regularly told in no uncertain terms that the army should "f**k off" as having army families nearby where bringing their house prices down. one particular incident i remember as if it was yesterday was playing football on a green when some guy came up to us and told us we where making too much noise and we had to go. I replied that we where harming no one and the green was not restricted. The guy went into the usual civvy b*locks of the army brings down the area yadda yadda. I was fed up with the whole thing and said as we where doing no harm we where not moving, he said he wanted a word with my dad to which I replied my dad was not at home as he was on a tour of duty in Ulster to which the guy came up with the classic line " oh on holiday as usual on tax payers money" My dads battalion had only recently lost three young soldiers murdered by the IRA (one was only 16), so it certainly was anything but a holiday. It all ended when the guy stormed off and phoned the barracks to say army kids where wrecking the area . At the end a RMP patrol came over and asked us for the sake of keeping the peace if it was possible to go and play in our street. My view of how the civilian population treats it's armed forces have always been coloured by thee events

Unfortunately there are tossers in all walks of life. There will be more of them in the civilian population as it is bigger and little is done to influence their behaviour. As you say, your view has been coloured by events as a kid. I assure you not all of us civilians are like this. We might not agree with all the forces are told to do, but that does not mean we don't support the forces. Equally unfortunately there are those in the forces who confuse lack of support for particular operations as not supporting the troops.

There are enough members of my family laying in foreign fields who might otherwise be alive today, plus currently serving family, for me not to think any other way. For me, remembrance is not just for one day.
