Sadly we only have Morrisons and Co-ops, but I have to say that their staff are always friendly and in some cases do offer to pack your purchases. None of this self service malarky here. We are getting a Sainsbury's in the new year, so we'll be going up in the world. Oh and not too far away we have M&S Simply Food outlets, 3 of them.

Anyway, you can't grumble too much if you have a Tesco nearby, they're very generous, as they pay your parking fines if you're pregnant. Well they did for one person in the news this week, who got a ticket for incorrectly parking at a Tesco store. But before you all start, this'll be another rant!!

They are all as good as each other, only some do things better.

Let's be honest about this - the whole reason why chip 'n' pin was introduced was to allow large companies like Tesco, ASDA et all to automate a lot more stuff as they no longer have to employ someone to physically check a signature! Just ask yourself how many of these automated tills existed before chip 'n' pin came along? Answer - none!

Chip 'n' pin has been the biggest con job since, well... the last big con job that's been pulled over the consumer. It was never anything to do with cutting down with fraud - that was a cover story to get the system past the consumer. How can they possibly claim that tapping in a pin code cuts down on fraud?! - after all, it's a lot easier to fool a cashier with a stolen pin code than it is with a signature! The problem is that now cashiers don't have to physically check the signature, they don't even bother checking the name on the card - I've lost count of the amount of times that I've paid with things with my wife's card (with her full knowledge, of course!).

Of course it's also provided the credit card companies with a very convenient excuse to throw the blame for fraudulent transactions back at the consumer. If your card number is stolen and someone uses your pin then you clearly gave it to them therefore it's your fault. Nice, huh!

I take your point. If only somebody collected the trolleys at Newton Abbot Tesco. The experience of driving past the 'trolley collecters' having their perpetual communal fag break as I attempt in vain to find a parking space uncluttered by trolleys hardly reduces my irritation.

Yup, like me

I haven't tried the Asda ones based on the fact that the Tesco one are so rubbish.

The thing that really annoys me is that Tesco near me have taken the decision to not have a manned checkout open during the night, so if I want to go purchase anything after about 10pm I have no choice but to use the sel scan ones. Fantastic when at 2AM one morning, I was behind someone for 30 MINUTES whilst they worked out which way to scan, how to insert a card, and how to put stuff into a bag which is on a pad which knows if you take the bloody bag away I complained about that one at Customer Service, which strangely was manned but wouldn't put any purchases through!

Well I have taken to doing a large chunk of my food shopping on line as the delivery cost is off set by the lack of impulse buys I make. You cant always get the odd thing like sechuan pepper but on the other hand sitting at the laptop with hot buttered toast is a far more civilaised way to do things. Also the delivery man has very little clue what is in your bags (unless you opt for the bagless delivery enviromentally friendly but may cause more raised eyebrows!)

Abel and Cole, organic food delivered to the door, hardly seen a supermarket in months now, occasionally use the corner shop down the road for bits.

Well, I assume this is for your benefit. In our area there have been a few well publicized credit card scams where the 'till person' ran cards through a scanner to copy all the details and then spend someone else's money later. In the great scheme of things I think I am much happier if no one else touches my card.

I can't stand Tesco, I could rant for hours.

They opened a big Tesco in the local village. The newsagent, the offlicence, one of the bakers, the butcher have all shut since it opened. But don't worry, look at all the jobs we're bringing in! Only a few months later they've closed all their basket only tills and replaced them with self-service tills and only one trolley till is staffed after 6pm.

They sell unwashed carrots in an ecological-looking middle-class appealing brown paper bag. They are about 10p a kilo more expensive than normal carrots. There's probably someone somewhere painting the dirt on them. You can buy them in 5kg sacks by the roadside for the same price as their 1kg bag. Which is self-service as well (a metal box bolted to the wall with a padlock on it which funnily enough doesn't need a supervisor to reset at every purchase).

The vast majority of Tesco's fresh produce is shite. All their fruit, meat and veg are mass produced, tasteless crap. Their venison is especially bad, as a dedicated and committed eater of things that squeak or generally look cute I was truly sad that an animal had died to produce it.

People slag Aldi but I live in a rural community and most of the veg farmers here who were producing for the local veg shops are now selling their produce to Aldi. The local beef farm sells only through the local butcher. And a hell of a lot better than Tesco it all is.

Cheers,

Stuart
