Hypocrites.

A whole fecking family of them.

I remember well this bloke's father railing against the whole ruling classes-capitalist thing back in the 70s-80s, great friend of the proletariat etc. Maybe so, in theory anyway, but he still doesn't want the great unwashed anywhere near his back garden and obstructing the view from his inherited stately pile.

Do as I say, not as I do eh?

So would I, it's just the irony of it with the people involved.

I have to say I think this is all a tiny bit unfair! Clearly there are issues with balancing the goal of greater public access to the coast, with protecting private "gardens" (as distinct from simply "coastal land"). It seems a little rich to criticise Tony Benn quite so vigorously for not doing something (ie voluntarily providing a right of way through his property) that he is currently under no obligation to do. The final quotes in the article seem entirely reasonable:

Quote:
"Mr [Hilary] Benn insisted: "In implementing the legislation, Natural England will look at how to deal with the issue of coastal access where it involves people's back gardens, hotels on the beachfront, etc. My father's house and garden will be treated in exactly the same way as everyone else's in the same situation."

His father said: "We will do whatever the legislation says."

The final quotes in the article seem entirely reasonable:
In the case of just about anyone else, I'd agree with you, but as the Minister of a Dept about to bring in right to roam legislation on the coast, which they've already put on other private landowners inland, one would have thought his family, especially one with the political record of his old man, would be voluntarily doing this and providing a good example for the rest of the landowning community, rather than posting warnings on their boundary against local walkers. Instead they choose to keep it as their exclusive preserve, one which they inherited from their capitalist, aristocratic forebears. (ie the sort of people TW Benn used to rail against). Perfectly within their rights but morally, very suspect.

Do as I say, not as I do; first rule of socialists once they get into power. As I said, hypocrites.

Tony Benn has been one of the few Labour politicians I've admired but Hilary Benn is a complete twat, like most of new Labour.

I spent most of my life in a country that has fairly liberal access laws -- even more so in recent years -- so when I moved here I never understood the obsession with keeping people off sprawling acres of open space. Well... until you see a load of scousers on a day trip to Formby Tell the butler to fetch the shotguns...
