Any religious fanatic scares me ........... well, worries me ............. as they can not be mentally stable? I suppose the other side of the coin is that they know things I don't?

I'll be back later, the voices want to talk to me again.

In the US, to become a citizen you have to swear alegiance. The same is true for residency in Canada. I suspect it is also the case in many other countries in the world.

One of the problems in this country is that no-one seems to care about 'being british'.

Is it possible that this might be a way of getting people to view this as 'theirs' rather than viewing it in the same way as a tenant views their rented property - it isn't mine, so i don't have to care'.

Perhaps if people cared more about being british, it might be a better place to live.

I really don't see why Scottish cant be Scottish, Welsh be Welsh and English people be proud to be English - they are after all different cultures and races with different histories.

Royal family need guillotine though. Or selling to america who seem to love them so they may as well pay for them too.

I agree in principal, but do you want to breakup the "United Kingdom"?

What exactly makes you so anti Royal Family? I don't have an issue with what ur saying just curious as to why you seem to be so "bitter/angry" at their existance.

"Cry God for Harry, England and St George!"

It always looked so much more fun then.
Let's dump these democratic aspirations, they never seem to work out, get ourselves a proper monarch and go and loot France the traditional way. With fire and the sword.

Not sure where that stops, after all countries' borders are arbritrary anyway from past wars, battles and squabbles between robber barons, so who really has a right to say who owns which piece of land?

I might be intensly proud for being from Surrey, so why should I need to be ruled from London (yes, I know I live in Devon, but you get the point ).

Besides, you Welsh and the Scots have your own Assemblies and we (in theory) have little or no say in some issues - why are we run by a Scot?

Worthless expensive relic. Have no purpose or reason for existing what so ever and public money should not be used to prop up an unelected body.
We dont live in the 1400s any more.

The Monarchy should be abolished, its all the governments fault, the state of the country, immigrants and the weather.

No wonder the Oz contingent call us the winging poms.

Last time I checked the Queen was still the head of government in the UK so swearing allegiance to queen and country was about the same as swearing allegiance to the government and the flag.

We lack a sense of national pride in this country and any steps to get national pride improved are a good thing.

Any one wishing to abolish the Monarchy obviously has no concept of the massive income generated by their existence. The tourists don't come hear for the weather they come for the history. They envy our Monarchy.

The Queen only has to do a state visit and political and economic barriers fall and the UK benefits.

We are a pathetically small little island with a disproportionate status in the world and this is in part due to our Monarchy.

They have to stay if only for the cold hard financial benefit they bring to us and I for one have no problem swearing allegiance to my country and its ruling government. Traveling the world has shown me just how lucky we are

Except for the weather of course

Immigrants now have to do a citizenship exam before they are allowed PR. This will mean soon the immigrants will know more about the construction of government in this country than the indigenous population.

In my own business as in most businesses these days I am competing with cheep labor from abroad. All the Brits moan about immigrants but they still want cheep building works done it seems, and are quite happy when a bunch of immigrants turn up to do it.

But isn't allegiance is sworn to their new country, not the monarch?

You're right, especially the Scotts and Welsh. I suspect that first generation immigrants cared quite deeply.

That's exactly why the suggestion's been made. I suspect that it won't make the slightest difference. "Citzenship" classes in schools just might be the right thing though. One huge problem is that any meaningful solution will only show its efficacy after about 20 years and no politician is interested in a time-frame longer than one electoral cycle.

You're right, depending on your definition of Britishness. Some of the most "pro-Britishness" posters here make me embarrassed to be British. However, the theoretical Britishness of tolerance and fair play is utterly laudable.
