    My Rant of the day...

Just spotted this story on the BBC news web site,

BBC NEWS | Wales | Teenager wins legal bangle battle

I have no problems with this at all, but did remind me of this story...

BBC NEWS | UK | 'Chastity ring' girl loses case

What happened to equality regardless of religion, apparently it's different if your not in a minority.

    Grrrr

One rule for one and another for others?
Which ever way you look at this it must be a minefield to navigate through all the various factions that exist in society.
Better that religion be kept seperate than used as a justification when it suits.
    just a thought.
    Cheers

Well if you actually diga little deeper then I reckon the courts got it right.

Kara - SikhiWiki, free Sikh encyclopedia.

Puts the Kara bracelet as mandatory and has been since the 1600's.

Now the chastity ring can hardkly be called traditional seeing as it only
kicked off, not even 10 years ago.

Purity ring - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

If this was a cross or crucifix there might be a point, but the Sikh one is most
definatley an established religious symbol, while the chastity ring is not.

Courts were bang on and cant see any inequality there.

I think that the difference is that in the bangles case, they are integral to the faith, whereas a chastity ring was not.

There were also a lot of interesting conflict-of-interest questions regarding the parents of the chastity-ring girl...

So no, nothing to do with minorities.

    Quite right.

The whole 'True love waits', silver ring, chastity bollocks is just puritanical fundamentalist bullshit that has nothing to do with traditional emblems of devotion. The purveyors of this crap are the same people that want to see sex education removed from schools altogether.

This is a really good read, if you're interested in some of the unreported background to the "Silver Ring Thing" case:

Now, to be fair, most of my sex education didn't happen at school.

The lack or privacy was one reason.......
