    Euro exchange rate!!

Just back from taking the kids to Eurodisney....the Hotel exchange rate advertised was 86 cents to the Pound!!!

At an exchange rate of approx £1 to 1 Euro, it would cost you around 50 soddin quid to outfit your beloved in a Disney dress for the duration, decent bottle of wine £30, taxi to airport, £60...and prices have jumped about 20% in Europe since I was last there in March 07!!!!!!!! Come to the conclusion that I cannot afford to go back until a serious change in exchange rates or more money coming into house.

And there is no point in trawling obscure websites in far flung parts of the world any more for dive or camera kit - it is cheaper in Blighty now!!

Trying to find some positives out of this exchange rate fiasco:

you can make some serious money on Ebay by selling to EU customers
we are exporting more to Europe
    ?more Europeans coming to us

    'Fraid that is about it.......

    Exchange Rates

My parents live in Tenerife, for the past few years and have seen the value of their money really drop recently - it may cause them long term problems if the rates stay that way for a significant period.

I moved to the US as an ex-pat in 05 and the rate was 1.85 and paid in £ which peaked at 2.11 at one point, luckily I switched my salary to $ in October as the rate is now $1.45. We have a colleague on secondment whose unprotected rate had gone from 1.9 to 1.45 - ouch.

I looked at buying a nano last week and with the exchange rate meant there was no difference between US and the UK.

Oh how the Embassy FCO staff are complaining about the exchange rate - they get paid in stearling. We didn't hear them sypathise with Locally Engaged staff when they were winning on the deal!

Works fine for me as I send money back to the UK.....long may it continue (sorry)

....Forgot to mention those sending money back to UK or moving back to UK from foreign climates - interesting point raised about pensions taken abroad and the like - extremes are not good for the majority. Mind you, a 30% payrise or paycut (depending on your point of view) must make for an interesting dinner party chat.....

I also hear the Euro sunshine property market is dead, so trying to sell up right now is going to be difficult.

Me, I'm headed out of the UK this year.......fed up of the rain: but at least its free!

Turkey is a good bet at the momnet. The £ v Lira has gone from £1 -2.45 to £1-2.25 localy so not that bad a drop. They use a lot of Euro localy so you have to watch out for that.

Bank interest rates in Turkey range from 15% to 18% for a UK Stirling account so its a great place to stash any savings you may have. They alow £250,000 no questions asked but so many people are doing it at the momnet the UK have slaped a £10,000 per person cash travling limit on us.

Best deals with Turkey are with HSBC and the Gurantee Bank. I wouldent trust the HSBC so i went for the Turkish bank.

An Irish buisnessman has just purchased a villa on our complex for £160,000. Hes borrowed £300,000 in the UK and put £140,000 in the Guarentee bank. The interest from the Turkish bank is paying off the £300,000 loan and he gets the villa for free.

Who said the Irish were thick?

Yeah but most of Europe is going into recession as well so that's not going to last.

    ECS Cylinders

Has anyone noticed a pretty big leap in the price of cylinders?

I was looking at prices of 16l and 18l twins yesterday and the prices seem to have gone up by about £150 in the past few weeks.

Does anyone know whats going on? Is this due to an increase in the price of steel and the drop in the pound? It almost make an Apocalypso look like a good investment
