Thanks to everyone for the PMs and words of support...it means alot to me that there are good people out there who understand how difficult it can be to make decisions like this in order to keep a business going.

And 'thanks' to the one person who redded me... made my day. I'll tell you what - next time you see someone who has lost their job or is really struggling through these difficult times, why don't you just walk up to them and kick them in the nuts... tell them it's their own fault.

You are entitled to your opinion.

    As I am to mine.

Telling me that 'some are meant to fail' are just the words of encouragement that I need at the moment - good job I'm made of stronger stuff.

    Thank you again.

Having my own business and going through difficult times as well I really do feel for you. The last few months have been really tough and the future for me although not bright I believe I'll scrape through after much worrying and grey hair.

I do find the title of your post offensive though, maybe written at the heat of the moment so I am not taking much notice of it. I believe the problems are not caused by the Americans (although they helped a great deal) but the overall greed and overspending by all weathy nations. (The amount of private borrowing is staggering).

I believe the Uk is fortunate that the Pound dropped in value last year, because if it had stayed strong the economy would be a lot lot worst. The British need desperatly a change of government, it's a joke.

So which nation was it that made all the fraudulent mortgages and sold them on then? Hardly offensive to point out the major culprit. Too sweeping maybe - I'll agree on that.

Really? To whom? The rich toffs and old Etonian duck house party?

Greed and corruption is what got us here and its a very sorry sight to see hard working honest people getting shafted. Its harder still to see decent honest business people having to get rid of staff they value. I don't see many politicians that are not greedy and corrupt, flipping houses to make a fast buck (shadow chancellor Osbourne for example) and avoiding their tax liabilities.

I honestly hope Pete's business is back on its feet soon. When it gets there it will not be thanks to any government policies or handouts.

I find it very refreshing to see someone annoyed at having to get rid of good people, we need more employers like that and less of the Hanson style asset stripping greedy don't-care money grubbers that seem to curry so much favour with Brown and Cameron alike.

    There are two issues here:

    1) The loss of good employees deeply regretted by the employer. That I sympathise totally as myself had to terminate a contract to one of my employees last month. This can be so tough especially if you know the employees and their family and how much the loss of employment affects them.

    2) All the political bullshit and blame game. Here we can argue until the cows come home. I will say though that a good chunk of employers don't enjoy firing people, unfortunately in the ruthless corporate world job losses are required to keep a company 'healthy' or survive the times. Sadky it is also the case that many companies taking this opportunity to get rid of excess staff balming the crisis when this is not the case - that is despicable.

I wish Pete all the best, strength and courage to pass these hard times. I may not agree with his views but as an employer I sympathise what he is going through.

Where's Lonnie - who cares? You don't need to know as it's just a sh!thole inhabited by bogans......like a smaller version of Adelaide, only with rain, frost & fog.

You will find that whilst every State in Aus reckons it's the best (and Adelaide has a huge chip on its shoulder about Melbourne), Taswegians haven't got round to interstate rivalry yet, they are too busy trying to decide whether it's the South (Hobart) or the North (Launcestron) that's best...........and we won't even mention the NW Coasters.

Naturally it's Hobart & the South, all the way.

Congratulations with the job by the way; as things are you've done well but things are nothing like as bad here as when I arrived in 1987, everyone had the arse worn out of their trousers back then and hopefully we will be out of the woods fairly soon as I think the funbdamentals are pretty healthy, apart from this huge debt f-cking Krudd & Co have landed on our kids.

    Doing It Richard

I have a few faults but being wrong isn't one of them.

remember, you don't have to swim faster than the shark. Just faster than your buddy.

Split fins are good......I have also invested in a pointed knife......because I care about my buddy and hopefully the "large fish" may be interested in where the claret is coming from...........

Hobart sounds good - hear the diving is pretty good as well?
