I totally agree with the above for my kids brought up in London there was no real need to have a car but they all wished to learn to drive. Their 17th birthday present was the cost of a driving liscence and 6 lessons only. They paid for the other driving lessons themselves and the 2 eldest bought cars and insured them themselves, my daughters first insurance for a clapped out mini was £1100! Now it is only her that owns a car the others use a bike or public transport.

We have used Tesco since our son got a provisional licence, at the minimum age (17?) he's a named main driver on my policy, his girlfriend is on there too. We effectively started a new policy with me as the policy holder, for which there was no NCD (new policy). He had an accident at he beginning of year 3 this year it was year 5 (so we have some NCD) but the premium was £800.
Car's a Vauxhall Astra 1.8 CD so I reckon taht is very good value for money, 3rd PF&T only, smallish XS (which only applies to own vehicle, seemed odd but true)

Might be worth giving them a call.

Have a look at Pass Plus if they still do it. I did this after I passed my test at 18 and it cut my premiums by over £200 a year. The course only cost about £80 from memory, almost all driving instructors can teach it - it's basically about 3 driving lessons after you pass your test to teach you how to drive at night, drive on motorways, drive on country roads, a bit like AOW really.

It's a good idea anyhow, but could well save you money.

Other thing is to restrict the mileage a lot, if you cut it down to £5K a year you might be able to get premiums down, other option is to try and get a very old car and insure as a classic - I know a few guys insuring 1.6 and 2 litre Capris with classic insurance for £500 a year at most with relatively good annual mileage allowance - could be a good way for your son to learn a bit about car maintenance as well as driving a "cool" car perhaps?

all insurance is a piss take price wise.

mine is £800 on a 1.9 DID mitsi space star "sport" trim (estate varient of the colt) in manchester with 5 years no claims (driving for 6 with a year as a named driver), no points at all, and one non fault accident to deal with and off road parking in a 28 year old male

ive not got a silly fast car (110 BHP) or a stylish one (tbh they are pretty naff looking and i only got it for the boot space) and its got an alarm/imob fitted

and the stupid thing is that fully comp is cheeper than 3rd party only.

i ove the danish system where the road tax is realy expesnive BUT you get your 3rd part in surance included in it at a fixed price for each car and then you can choose to go for theft/fire and fully comp at your own choice instead of the UK system of rip off companies using frankly impossible to decipher series of unknown aspects to determine my fitness to drive a vehicle and thus charge me for the privilage

I'd say you're getting ripped off for that price. We could have insured me (26) and Amy on a Subaru Legacy Twin Turbo for less than that, quicker than an Impreza, and about the highest insurance group available - it's the same a a Ferrari from what we could see talking to insurance companies. I have 7 years no claims, but after 5 years I think they stop counting.

Unless, of course, you live in Mosside.

The system of expensive road tax but including 3rd party is great, but it does mean that very young drivers can get access to very powerful cars and do a lot of damage. At the moment you could buy an Impreza for £1K on auto trader, with high mileage and absolutely knackered, but still extremely quick, and in the hands of an 18 year old extremely dangerous - they simply haven't been driving long enough to handle a car that can do that, and don't have the maturity not to drive it like a rally car on the B roads around. I'd rather have teenagers driving 1 litre tiny cars that they can do a lot of damage with, but the chances of them doing it are much smaller. In Denmark, having spent a week there a few years ago, you'd struggle to find another person to crash into on most of their roads!

Endoman, I reckon you could buy him something like this and have it insured for £500 a year at most. You'll probably make the difference back on the insurance in less than 3 years, and your son will have a "cool" car that looks fast, even if it actually really isn't: For Sale - 1.6 1983 Ford Capri Cabaret - Capri Power Board maintenance cost almost zero, parts very cheap and easy to come by, and you can do 99% of the work that ever needs doing yourself. It's a nice car too, and stuff like this just isn't selling in the current market where people are ditching weekend cars all over the place.

Cheers Digs, if anything, he's having the one litre Corsa and I'll have the Capri! I used to drive my mothers when I passed my test. I hope to come out of the seal with a dive wagon of some sort, it may be a Galaxy type thing, but better than a Corsa, oh and the pass plus sounds perfect, thanks.

    Having hastle with Co-OP insurance!!!!.
Moved there last year from Direct line. No problems at all. Now 1 year on & NO claims ( I have full no claims) they tell me they cant renew as i am too big a risk!!!!.
Nothing has changed in the last year, clean licence. Only claim 2 yrs ago as a non fault ( Some one ran in to ME!!!).
But according to them I am UN-INSURABLE!!!!!!.
As some body HIT ME 2 yrs ago I am now more likely to have another accident!!!!.
    What a crock of SH*T!!!!!!.
As a result I now have to say I have had cover refused!!. Bet that will cost ME!!!!

Avoid getting cover refused by getting a quote from Co-op which restricts you to 5K miles a year, has an excess of £2K+, and anything else you need to change to get a quote. That way you haven't had insurance refused, they've just put ridiculous conditions on it.

    Then take your business elsewhere.
