    Car Insurance

I have a crappy little Corsa 1 litre, bought to put 18 yr old son on it. My premium was about 200quid fully comp etc. Full no claims etc. To add him with existing insurers it's over 2 grand, car is not worth that much.

Found a new insurer at 700 odd, so had to cancel with current people, policy started 2 months ago and I paid in full. I get a refund of 40 odd quid out of the 200 I paid, wonderful. They don't refund the breakdown policy, and the new insurance comes with free breakdown so I don't need it. I'll call two bloody trucks out if it does break down.

Seems that when he passes his test it may increase again! It may then be time to get him on his own policy and me get a dive wagon.

You obviously didn't see Top Gear the other night when they were looking at the cost of young males to insure them in their own car. One of the quotes was £8K. Its not the cost of their car that determines the premum but what damage they can do with it. ie hit an Aston Martin or a Bucati Varon!!

My advice is to start early - in educating your son that Public transport is the way to go. Car users are poluting the planet and hogging the roads slowing down busses and bicycles etc....

This way when they reach an age that they would want to drive your car they don't want to so you can leave the insurance on your mid life crisis toy as it is!!

I've started now with my 2.5 year old....

Repeat after me Camie - Car BAD!! Bus GOOD!!

    p.s.

Also I would have told your son he'd have to wait until he can afford one himself, as my dad did with me, and saved on the insurance cancellation.

His insurance will go upto the £3k mark when he passes.

There is another way Collingwood insurance they insure the learner in other peoples cars £90 1st month then about £80 after that cancel anytime.

If you put his name as a named driver or only driver it doesn't matter , if he drives it it will cost alot.

Main influence is where you live and his driving experience, and low insurance groups help.

My son has tried everything in compare dot com to get cheep insurance mini city 20 years old seems to be the cheepest at £1800
    Resistance is futile!!!

    Unhappy

Just think about how many taxis your son could take over a year for £1800? Your mind would at rest too about him returing from the pub after a few drinks.

he'll be stopping as a named driver until he can pay for it himself. It's not the cost so much as the way they have you over a barrel re cancelling

I have my car insurance paid by DD monthly. I think I just inform them I wish to cancel and they take an admin fee. Not sure about the No Claims think though. I'd assume that by law the Data protection thing (where they have to give you a copy of all the info they hold on you) might produce evidence of a no claims history.

You cant win really, the risk from young ppl. especially males is so high the insurance is obscene.

One of my wifes friends (female) paid £3k a year, and she didnt think it was to bad. Untill I informed her my annual bill is smaller than her monthly amount.

When he passes his test, if he has his own insurance it will be very high, but he will get no claims.

If he uses yours he may not get the no claims and yours will be almost as high.

    Options to reduce it include;
    - low IG
-low milage (say 2k a year)
    - waiting until your 25
    -move to india

couldn't be much lower insurance group, I'll consider getting him on his own policy once he passes. At least it then gives me a valid reason to look for a proper dive mobile :-) so there will be an upside to it all.

After 1st year no claims will kick in and improve matters, he's not a drinker so that's not a worry.

i tell ya what bill im glad that im not a young driver starting out again !

although seeing the way some young drivers drive now when theyve just

passed the insurers should charge em 10 k a year!

as for putting a young family member on as a named driver !

not for me thanks ive worked to hard to get the no claims bonus lol
