Avatars and sigs - why? Rant.

Do you people really need to have avatars and signatures? Personally I think they make this place look like some crappy teener site. I really cant understand how people think that having some shitty animation or picture is a good idea. Many times i will be reading a thread and wont even bother looking at some peoples posts regardless of how knowledgable or experienced they may be, purely because of their annoying avatar or picture. I usually think 'this guy's a tit i wont bother reading what he has to say' and scroll down to the next one with a less offending avatar or signature.

Im not knocking the site, i think its one of the best dive forums ive been on (definetly the best one in the UK at present) but i'd prefer it if the cheese was toned down so I could view it at work without people thinking im viewing an Aol Pop Idol forum or something...

What does everyone else think, are the shit graphics and stuff usefull to this sites aims?

It's called expressive self presentation, one of the ways we can project an identity in a limited-bandwidth environment. The fact that you recognise someone - even as just being a tit - indicates that it works.

Why do you call yourself 'greatergreen' for example? Is that your name? (if it is, whoops!).

If you don't like it, you can edit your options ( User CP / Edit Options / Thread Display Options ) to hide the 'cheese' and make it safe for work.

Simple answer to simple question- if avatars and signatures offend you, are you really going to take heed of the (plentiful and usually appreciated) advice? If offended, don't read them - that's what makes this site different and worth observing....
