Weekend vis?

I missed my weekend dive due to a knackered poat [EDIT]poat???? BOAT[EDIT]starter motor. Did anyone get a dive in the Channel? What vis did you get and at what depth and how far out? The closer you were to Eastbourne the more interested I will be . Has the vis been totally screwed?

For the rest of you, pls feel free to boast about the marvellous conditions you had over the weekend. I will ignore these posts anyway. Jealous with a slight hint of bitterness? Moi?

Went up to St Abbs/Eyemouth with Jules, the shore dive I wanted to show Jules had 6ft high breakers pounding the shore so instead we went off to Abbs to grab a boat dive - got there to find every boat moored up for the duration! Sea nice and calm but speaking to Billy, the skipper of the Lady Gail, he told us he's fdropped a bunch of divers in earlier that day and the dSMBs of the first ones in were up before the last pair got in the water. One guy had taken his camera and knew it was time to bin the dive when he held the camera out in front of him and it disappeared in the bad viz!
UK diving, c'est la vie n'est pas?

Not surprised you didnt get in stevil - i was out doing safety cover for a sailing race on saturday and i can say, hand on my heart, that they were the biggest green rollers i have ever been out in. Made me feel very small, in a very small boat.

It wasn't bad off Swanage, probably about 3m. Although to be honest, I'm crap at putting to a figure to viz, so it could have been anywhere between 1 and 20m...

Edit: We were shallow and mostly in the bay, but our trainees did a good job of avoiding the sea bed

Isn't this why you get the 6 inch bit of string. Wrap it around the top and pull If it was a 20 litre inboard diesel you are allowed to use a 12 inch piece of string....says so here in my old BSAC handbook.

Thems were the days. Nothing but a black bin bag and fins that I carved out of wood between me and a force 8......had to tie the porthole to my beard so I had both hand to swim with.

Someone in the ex-club used to have a home made reel made out of plywood - it was about 8 inches across the narrowest bit, and easily a foot long. The string was the wire from an old electric fence.

Had somewhere between 200-300m vis, but that was out of the office window as I was working all weekend.

The scheduled Club dive out of Shoreham got blown off before they even left the hut Sunday morning, supposed to have been blowing a 4-5 where they were planning to go. Still, running up the compressor at 6am to fill cylinders that were no longer required seemed like a small but satisfying act of revenge on all the nice 'travellers' who have decided to invade the site where our Club hut is located. One even had the barefaced cheek to demand what the guys were doing around there at that time of the morning.

Regards

Mark

Bummer - if you own the site, you could even get a bill to clear up the crap they leave behind, even if you don't you'll pay it anyway from your poll tax.
