| Food Warning URGENT FOOD WARNING An urgent warning has been issued by the Food Standards Agency after a potentially cancer-causing dye was discovered in more than 350 widely-eaten food products. The dye, known as Sudan 1, got into a batch of chilli powder. The powder was used in a large consignment of Crosse and Blackwell Worcester Sauce made by Premier Foods. The sauce was then added as an ingredient to at least 359 products made by supermarkets and leading food companies such as Unilever. The FSA is urging householders who have the affected products not to eat them. Sudan 1 is a red dye used for colouring solvents, oils waxes, petrol and shoe polish and it is illegal to add it to food in the UK and EU. FSA chief executive Jon Bell told Sky News: "There is no risk of immediate illness and the general risk is very small. "Clearly if anyone has any products throw them away or return them," he added. "Because of the widespread use of this Worcester sauce to flavour other foods, we may find further affected products. We will continue to take action to remove these and minimise the risk to consumers." Mr Bell said the problem was uncovered when supplies reached an Italian company which tested for Sudan 1. One of the food manufacturers, Unilever, said they had withdrawn four products which contained ingedients supplied by Premier Foods earlier in the week. Unilever told retailers on Wednesday to pull two types of pot noodle, one seafood sauce and a 400 gram shepherd's pie. List of products here |

| What utter non-sense. My reference lists Sudan 1 as being carcinogenic (liver) when a rat is fed 21,630mg of Sudan 1 per kg, continuously for 2 years. The only way I can see that it would be dangerous is to inject yourself with 'contaminated' sauce, and even then you'd needs loads (80 mg/kg in mice). A more appropriate warning would be to tell hospitals not to replace people's drips with ones containing Worcester Sauce. (Of cause, since the manufacturer has said that the foods should not be consumed, you should throw them away / take them back anyway, so that I don't get sued if my reference is wrong) |

| the pesticides/herbicides and concoctions of both administered to supermarket bought produce are the real problem! pay crap prices and you will eat crap, i grow as much as i can myself, spend about £20 on seed per year, instead of £20 per week on tasteless toxic veg! it takes a bit of effort but thats what people did before gym memberships became the norm. |

WENT TO ASDA IN LUTON TONIGHT - WIGMORE. NO MENTION OF THIS. NO PRODUCT RECALL NOTICES OUTSIDE, NO ANNOUNCEMENTS, SORT IT OUT ASDA/WALMART, JUST COZ YOU EARN MILLIONS OUT OF US SUCKERS, DOESN'T MEAN WE DON'T MATTER. /CAPS OFF Daza CC'd Asda Customer Services EDIT: ACTUAL E MAIL TO ASDA I went to my local store in Luton (wigmore branch) tonight Friday 18th February. Why were there no notices regarding the product recall of asda products because of the sudan colouring. Looking at the list of 350 products, the majority are Asda products. I spend approx £200 per week in this store, and to be honest I'm not going back in until the "all clear" is sounded. Sort it out. You may view customers as a bottomless pit of money to be exploited, but we do expect some quality in return. Darren

We're talking about a "walking past somebody who used to smoke a few years ago" kind of risk - utterly irrelevent and a waste of time worrying about it! (Of cause, since the manufacturer has said that the foods should not be consumed, you should throw them away / take them back anyway, so that I don't get sued if my references are wrong) |
