Talking benches ....let the masses decide

Ok ... having taken the Hatch locker off the foredeck of the stormdrift and fitted an (overly expensive) flush hatch .. i now have a much bigger kitting up space on the foredeck ....but its missing something......................................... .................. AHAH a bench or two !

What width (depth?) of bench is the best for everyone .... a wide (fits your twins , your bum and leaves room to swing your feet) bench .....leaving less room to move about or a narrower (just the twins and your bum so you can kit up) bench giving more space to faff about ......

I await your views

Hazel

i personally prefer wider benches as it gives more room to rest stuff and to take the weight of the kit and it makes it more stable with a lot of weight,

narrow low benches are hard work

2Ft high bench is ideal and at least 3 decking planks wide for those with fat arses.

You need to be able to sit well back when coming back aboard in a lumpy sea and be able to sit down securely. Space underneath for boxes so no diagonal braces and lots of tie on ropes (not just one each). Think teckie with a lot of weight to secure.

Not too sure on the dimensions but the most dissapointing thing about nice benches is when you end up with you feet dangling off the deck when in your harness because they are too high up!

I dived a boat out of Falmouth I think and the benches were OK but the bracing underneath was in the way. Think of a wire frame cube: diagonally on a face is OK, diagonally right through the center of the volume means no box/bag fits under the bench and they have to clutter up the rest of the deck.

Hazel ...

My new one is stands 25 inches tall on the seat, 24 inches deep ( 4 deck slats ) and 2.3 mts long ..... per side....

We have had on each side a mixture of kit, and can comfortably have 4 divers per side in twin 12's plus a stage, each diver agreed that room was nice.

I have boxes underneath to hold dive kit , with a bit of room for big bulky dive bags, even the legs and boxes were designed so divers can place thier own box underneath.

It's bolt down with 8 8 mm studs which are welded to a stainless steel plate fixed to the deck and glassed over, the plates are 8 x 6 ".

There is a cross brace underneath on just the ends.

I had a lot of comments from people when i added some photos.....

To prove the strenght, I towed Dover Lifeboat which is 47 tons, just by placing thier tow rope round the top of the bench ..... I did take my boat up to full rev's, someone was standing by my bench, waiting for it to ripped thought the deck or buckle up, which it never,,,
So, dive kit on it will be no prob's .

I know 2 very nice men , that would love to have a all expenses paid holiday in scotland , that could make you one ...
