PARIS (Reuters) - France overwhelmingly rejected the European Union’s constitution in a referendum on Sunday, plunging the EU into crisis and dealing a potentially fatal blow to a charter designed to make the enlarged bloc run smoothly.

President Jacques Chirac swiftly conceded defeat in an address to the nation as the "No" camp celebrated projections by polling groups showing about 55 percent of voters opposed the EU’s first constitution.

Chirac, 72, said the defeat, which EU leaders fear could stall European integration, weakened France in the 25-member bloc but the gradual process of ratification by member states would continue and France would remain in the Union.

He promised a fresh impetus for the government, signalling he was ready to dismiss unpopular Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin.

"France has expressed itself democratically. You have rejected the European constitution by a majority. It is your sovereign decision and I take note of it," he said.


lets face it...who in europe gives a fuck about the French...My mistake was living in Spain.
The Spanish keep their heads down whilst screwing the european community, thats life...the french believe they have something to say..!!!

Terrifyingly accurate, at the risk of sending this thread into politics give this site a read, add a pinch of salt for personal opinion of course, If you believe the stories like me you'll get lost in this site, either way its one of the reasons I jumped at the chance to call Sydney my new home and be rid of the lot of them...

Somewhere in there is my favourite story, recently there have been accusations that the eu ministers have been clocking in early on a friday morning then doing one for the wekend whilst still claiming their significant daily attendance rate. This has been captured on camera. The parliments response to this... Sort out the slackers ? No...
