ABANDONED CAMPING GEAR SPARKS UNNECESSARY COASTAL SEARCH

A coastal search involving lifeboats, a Coastguard Rescue Helicopter and Coastguard Rescue search teams was sparked yesterday after the discovery of camping gear on the cliffs near Worth Matravers, Dorset.

Emergency services were alerted to the gear found on the cliffs but with no sign of their owner and began a fruitless search. By the afternoon, the owner of the items was identified and he confirmed that he had abandoned them as they had become too heavy to carry.

Portland Coastguard's Ros Evans says,
"It is important to report to the Coastguard or the Police, articles that have been lost, or abandoned, in an area that may later lead to concern if found. Such items might include life saving apparatus lost overboard, windsurf sails, abandoned rucksacks on cliff tops, abandoned tents in a coastal area, lost tenders, diving equipment like surface marker buoys, canoe/kayak paddles.

All of these items have previously sparked extensive searches involving helicopters, lifeboats, Coastguard teams and Police and were later confirmed to have been lost but not reported."

Press releases and further information about the Agency is available on the Web at www.mcga.gov.uk
