Shark Live Sunday C5 8pm

Another Shark Program. C5 8pm

Killer Shark Live Starting 2nd October, Five screens a unique seven-day event documenting the magnificent world of the great white shark.

Presented by Five's investigative journalist Donal MacIntyre and science and natural history presenter Nick Baker, the series combines observations of this most feared predator, with analysis from the world's leading shark experts including shark behaviourist Melanie Paul.

The programmes come live from the Condor diving boat on Isla de Guadalupe, 160 miles off the coast of Baja, California, and from the Scripps Institute of Oceanography in San Diego.

Each night Nick Baker and an intrepid camera team dive in dangerous waters observing the species, by conducting unique scientific experiments including a live shark autopsy.

Meanwhile Donal MacIntyre interviews shark experts and survivors about their remarkable experiences, in order to accomplish the most comprehensive, aquatic observation to date.

In addition, footage from around the world of the most shocking attacks is presented in a series of films, Bitemares.

Is that an autopsy on a live shark or a live autopsy on a dead shark??

Quite interesting in places - like how many times can Donal McIntyre say "amazing"!
I was quite pleased to see the shark-bait girl - my wife was getting quite tiresome by then with her admiration of Nick baker!

could be edited down to about 5 mins of actual shark footage from the guys in the cage and junk the rest of it...

mostly sensationalist stuff showing the woman getting her leg bitten off and the "reconstruction" of the guy who's leg was bitten off.

although I did wonder about the incident with the woman.

she's a student, been on this boat for 3 months working as a chef.
Skipper decides they all need a break and stops for them to have a swim...

.....sure they weren't just fed up of her cooking and trying to engineer a change of chef?

Then the following night they're talking about shark deterrents...

shark nets off beaches in S.Africa....no mention of the resultant indiscriminate slaughter of all large marine animals etc.

electronic deterrents....gadgets!

chainmail shark suits....."although this one is not designed for Great White protection, that'd be our other model".....so why not show us the relevant suit then FFS!

Probably because chainmail wouldn't stop the crushing damage of a bite, only stop the cuts.................

indeed, and that was the point made, which led the viewer to then think...."erm, ok, so that's not the suit you would use if going near a Great White, so show me the one that you just talked about would be!"

the guy demonstrating the suit spent as much time talking about another one they had that was designed for Great Whites, but this wasn't the model on display.

It's a bit like showing you a nice wet suit, and then describing how their new drysuits worked but they don't have that in the showroom today, when you were actually wanting to try on the drysuit...

Ha ha! Good point! I can't imagine a "Great white-proof" suit would be a great pleasure to dive in!

I reckon the only reason the chainmail suit was there was so they could link it to the footage of Valerie Taylor (who developed the first one) testing it for real with real sharks...

seen that before etc.

I'd be more interesting in seeing the suit they had developed for coping with great whites, and some footage of somebody 'encouraging' a great white to have a nibble with some bait !
