| Imported post <font color='#0000FF'>Is this what you mean: 1. Messenger pop-up spam (Windows XP only) The relentless tide of email Spam flooding the Internet is bad enough but Spammers are now busily exploiting a loophole in Windows XP, which allows 'pop-up' adverts to appear on users desktops. They are generated by the Messenger service, a facility for sending administrative messages across PC networks. The trouble is it is enabled by default in XP (please switch it off Bill, on XP Home at least…) and many home users find themselves on the receiving end of a stream of unsolicited garbage. Fortunately the Messenger Service can be switched off, simply go to Run on the Start menu and type 'services.msc', without the quotes, and click OK. In the right pane scroll down to and double-click Messenger then the General tab and under Service Status click Stop. In the Startup Type drop-down menu select Disable then Apply and OK. P.S Am I the only one that not seeing the Avatars of some people, including my own? Quite a few a blank.

| Imported post there are two types of pop ups 1. Java based popups that look like small browser windows. Use adaware from www.lavasoftusa.com. It's free and will sort them out. Just do a full scan and nuke anything it finds 2. Windows messenger based (not the same as MSN Messenger). As stated previously, you need to disable the messenger service to do this, as Chris has already described. Gareth |

| Imported post Oh, and apparently web pop-ups run on certain port numbers - try blocking 135, 137, 138, 139, 445, and anything over 1024

| Imported post It's not a messenger problem, it's a program or something I think. I've done the whole Ad Aware thing, which was very easy, and I think I may have destroyed the little thingamawhatsit that was breaking my whatjamadoobrie. Now then, I'll let the computer run on t'internet, and see how many little windows I get... |

| Imported post Dom, how do I block a port? I'm confused. Do you know which menus it's in? |

| Imported post You could also try Pop-Up Stopper from PanicWare (it's a free download). I think it's a brilliant little program. You can get it from www.panicware.com (sorry, not sure how to link automatically) Richard |
