| Diver reunites owner with ring lost in Lake Erie 47 years ago Man reunited with ring lost in 1958
BUFFALO, N.Y., Jan. 14 (UPI) -- A Buffalo, N.Y., man has been reunited with his 1958 Sloan High School class ring that had been on the bottom of Lake Erie for 47 years.
Ron Witkowski said he and a friend, Norm Andrzejewski, had been celebrating their good scores for their pre-college IQ test at a day at an Ontario beach, when Andrzejewski dived under the water and lost his contact lenses. Back at the beach a week later, the two teens decided to conduct an experiment to trace where the contracts may have ended.
"We thought that if we dropped the ring in the water, we would find the general direction of where the current would take it," Witkowski told the Buffalo (N.Y.) News.
However, a wave broke, and the ring disappeared -- and the teens stopped celebrating their IQs.
Last summer, Scuba diver Tony DiLeo found the ring on the floor of Lake Erie about 30 feet down and traced the ring to Witkowski. It was a surprise to many because Witkowski and Andrzejewski had never told anyone about the lost lenses and ring.
