How many people have access to O2?

In Garf's recent thread "Hypothetical" a number of people refered to going on to pure O2 to assist the flushing of nitrogen.

Although this sounds like the text book answer, how many people actually carry O2 around with them and if they don't, where do they expect the O2 to come from?

I appreciate any thoughts expressed.
Regards
Mal

I'm breathing some right now.

We take an O2 set on club trips, and of course I have it on the KISS.

Hypothetical refered to an incident at Stoney. They will have it.

Any Dive site or boat should have O2 available, and plenty of it!

I was on a boat recently wheer a buddy pair had a fast ascent. When I got back on board I found one on the boats O2 and one on his own 32%.

Being on an Inspo, I immediately put the latter onto my O2.

Both mine and teh boats O2 ran out quite quickly, but by then another RB diver came on board with 150 bar O2 and that got us most of the way home.

I guess what I'm saying has 3 points:

1. All boats/sites need at least 2 O2 kits. The bigger the tanks the better.
2. RB divers can assist with O2 supplies
3. 3l or 5l tanks of O2 DO NOT LAST LONG!

You dont have to have access to 100% 02 to help with flushing N2. you can use any other mix of nitrox to hand that's likely to be in other ppls cylinders. Any enriched air will help flush N2 from the body.

But to answer your question, most well organised dive trips, will/should have an 02 kit to hand.

Like Janos says, I've got the RB. The scrubber will last 4hrs, the O2 about 10hrs on a full tank. I usually carry a small tub of lime enough for a refill for diving use in case of a flood or whatever so I can always refill the scrubber if somewhere remote. I also generally carry a 7 or 12 of O2 as well having been in the situation of having to drive myself the two hours to the chamber. The small bottles in O2 kits are never enough, even if you're just waiting for an ambulance.

I think I have just found the justification to SWMBO for the cost of a CCR .

This little (and cheap) device can extend the life of your O2 kits up to eight times. http://www.diversalertnetwork.org/ca.../651-1000.html

I have a regulator on the O2 side of the YBOD. In the event of a diving injury my buddy can be on O2 before the boat picks us up. Darn it he can go on O2 as we do a safety stop.

When we had an incident for real the injured diver went on the boats O2 and his buddy went on mine.
