| Any budding Nautical Archeologists out there !! Dear All NAS Part I: Certificate in Foreshore and Underwater Archaeology Our club has put together an excellent opportunity to take the above course in the North East of England. We have a number of spaces available (available on a first come first served basis) The dates are the 15th and 16th April - The cost for the two days is £110. The inital An Introduction to foreshore and underwater archaeology This is the entry-level course to the NAS Training Programme and is aimed at introducing nautical archaeology to divers and non-divers, and promoting their interest in the subject. It provides a broad-based view of the subject by covering a wide range of topics. The objectives of the course are that participants should: have been introduced to the basic principles and scope of nautical archaeology appreciate the importance of our nautical heritage and the need for the recording, protection and preservation of the underwater heritage have been given the necessary knowledge to undertake a basic pre-disturbance site survey The emphasis during the practical sessions is on surveying and recording. In addition, the theory component stresses the need for the conservation and preservation of the underwater cultural heritage. The format involves a one-day course (usually over a weekend), which is conducted by approved tutors and instructors. Certain parts of the course can be adapted to suit the special requirements of the individual groups taking part. The minimum diving qualification level for those taking part in the pool exercises is CMAS 1-Star or equivalent, e.g. BSAC Ocean Diver, SAA Open Water Diver, or PADI Open Water. The 'Introductory' course is not examined and participants are provided with a certificate of attendance only. This course usually costs £50 (UKP). NAS Part I: The NAS Certificate in foreshore and underwater archaeology The NAS Part I builds on the basic knowledge and practical skills introduced in the 'Introductory' course. The practical elements of the course will be held in sheltered open water or on a foreshore site for non-divers. Syllabus Day 1 Project case study of, e.g. 'The Mary Rose' Dating methods and site interpretation Introduction to wreck recording techniques Practical session using the wreck recording form De-briefing session Day 2 Introduction to 3-D survey programmes Survey practical Data processing using the 3-D survey software programme Introduction to finds handling and the problems associated with waterlogged material Finds handling workshop Project logistics and safety Introduction to the NAS Wreck Recording Project and other NAS Projects The minimum diving qualification for NAS Part I is CMAS 2-Star or equivalent, e.g. BSAC Sport Diver, SAA Club Diver, or PADI Advanced Open Water. The course normally costs £110.00, but this will vary depending upon local facilities and diving fees. The fee includes a course folder to store qualifications records and membership of the NAS for one year. Membership is normally backdated to the 1st of April in the year of attendance, but those attending after the 1st of January can opt to join the Society from 1st April the following year. Anyone who is already a member of the Society is entitled to a £10.00 reduction in the course fee.
