Selfish B*****ds

Have just returned from a family holiday to Somerset, a great time was had by all (due in part to the 28-30 degree weather and constant sunshine). However one incident of selfishness really wound me up. Every year Weston super mare holds a helicopter weekend were helicopters from the various armed forces pay a visit, the days when the event is held resembles a seen out of MASH with helicopters constantly landing and taking off. Its a great event and a lot i would suppose a lot of work goes into organising such events with displays from the red arrows and such.

Last Friday was our last day there so we spent the day at the beach, an announcment was made that the Royal Navy display team "the black cats" would be putting on a display at one thirty and people were asked to clear the water at one o'clock as this would put them directly under the display teams flight path. The tide was actually out, which left a mass expanse of mud (with warning signs about sinking mud). Well, one thirty came, the helicopter team turned up, hundreds of people settled down to watch the show, all that was left was for the three people (two looked like they were in their late teens and one a bit younger) to clear the area and guess what!!.....yep, they refused. No amount of arguing from the park ranger would bring them in At the end the helicopter display team decided it was to risky to carry out the show and went back to their base much to the disappointment of everyone. As soon as the helicopters had gone, the tw*ts made their way back to the shore. It makes you wonder about the mentality of such people, they where quite happy to spoil peoples fun as well as wasting the time of the Navy helicopter crew.

sorry about the lenght of this posting but I was so annoyed that I had to get it off my chest

A beach in Cornwall used security guards to remove a guy from the water after lifeguards said conditions were too dangerous for swimming. Perhaps similar should have been applied.

I heard a similar thing recently about the Red Arrows... they were putting on a display... there was a 5 mile "no fly" exclusion in the area, that had been made public for the previous several weeks.

The crimsons were in the middle of one of their first manouvers when Red one saw a Cessna fly into the display area. After frantic attempts to contact and turn back the Cessna, which were totally ignored by the Cessna pilot, Red One issued the "home lads, now!" command...

Display cancelled.

Well ..... maybe ....... I agree that in Daffy's example the people in question should have been given a discreet kicking and escorted away HOWEVER forcing someone else to do or not do something JUST because they deem it to be dangerous is completely different and .......... no ........ turning Nanny State Green .............. bulging is now causing underwear trauma ...............

I suppose the flipside of that is on privately owned beaches (most of them are) said idiot's NOK nowadays tend to wheel out lawyers. Trouble is they tend to put other peoples lives at risk when they want rescuing.

Not saying I agree with it though. They should have got the choppers in and the beach hogs would have soon shifted with the spray off the mud. It HURTS!

I had forgotten about that bit ............ I'm not from an age where one blames someone else for ones failings or mistakes ...........

It seems to me unreasonable to expect the teenagers, who rightly rejected your social conditioning, to stop enjoying the simple pleasure of playing in the sea so a few hundred people could watch the wanton pollution of that environment by machines that they were deriving so much pleasure from.

The irony is that the evening before, the evening news had a report that the coast guard were called out to rescue two teenagers that had wondered onto the same mud flats, ignoring the warning signs, and had got trapped in the mud. By the time the coast guard reached them the tide had turned and was steadly rising.

While I suppose you could argue that many of us divers have a choice and exercise it to put ourselves in danger sometimes, that one really sounds like Darwinism at work.

They're lucky that stupidity is not a captital crime
