| Sheerness On Sea SS Montgomery Being a big Fan of Mark Williams I was intrigued by his article on the SS montgomery a Ship sunk during the WW2 During his excellent programme BIG Bangs. Which was and still is carry some very big Bombs. They did try and salvage the HE however only managed to get roughly 1/2 of it. Originally it contained 13,064 general purpose 250 lb (113 kg) bombs 9,022 cases of fragmenting bombs 7,739 semi-armour-piercing bombs 1,522 cases of fuses 1,429 cases of phosphorus bombs 1,427 cases of 100 lb (45 kg) demolition bombs 817 cases of small arms ammunition Of which 3,173 tons of munitions containing 1,400 tons of TNT remain on the wreck. Mark did state that if it went up (Unlikely) the wave created would hit Holland:-) Sheerness might be a tad Scorched as well. One of the reasons why the explosives have not been removed was the unfortunate outcome of a similar operation in July 1967 to neutralize the contents of the Kielce, a ship of Polish origin, sunk in 1946 off Folkestone in the English Channel. During preliminary work the Kielce, containing a comparable amount of ordnance, exploded with force equivalent to an earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale, digging a 20-foot-deep crater in the seabed and bringing "panic and chaos" to Folkestone, although no injuries. Picures of the bits you can see ssrichardmontgomery - SS Richard Montgomery, May 2005 Wreck Survey. http://www.mcga.gov.uk/c4mca/2000_su...%20on%20sea%22 Good site. | Best thing they could do with that it set it off and the hole that is the Isle of Sheppey and the village idiots that live there. |

it is a shame that this wreck can't be dived, especially as it's so close to my house, although if it ever did blow up, then my house may not be where it is now!!!!!!, they keep coming up with different ideas as to how to solve the problem of the wreck, and trying to guess just how much damage would be done to the Island
