We have got a TomTom 700 and we are more than happy with it as it updates fasterthan the Garmins so our friend says as he has a Garmin. The only reason for buying one was for my diving and his fishing trips abroad. It includes the whole of Europe, Uk speed camera's and traffic updates. It was a God send when i was taken to hospital in Hastings whilst on a camping weekend.....he managed to find where i was taken at a push of a button. It cost about £250 from Comet, not sure of the cost now but i feel its worth every penny and we have done some miles this year!.

As someone said earlier don't leave any evidence in your car that you own one......that includes suction marks on the windscreen. I had my car broken into just before Xmas and thankfully there was no TomTom inside.

    Cheers

I saw something on here about not setting the "Home" value in a sat nav, incase it gets nicked... makes sense!

With Tom Tom 710 I set a password so whenever it's turned on you need to digit it in before using it. 'Home' is the neighbourhood, it won't lead to my house, also as Ilive in an apartment block.

I remember reading that thread and was really grateful for all the tips which were passed on to HWMBO. Good old YD!!! I don't think the suction marks on my windscreen made them break in, it was the Lap top and a bag of dive gear they wanted......thankfully it didn't belong to me but i still felt sick for days after.

    Big lesson learnt!!!

so, 3 months further into 2007 are there any great new satnav's I should look at?

Will be travelling all over the UK and Rep of Ireland with work; probably need camera stuff on it.

On a bit of a budget though, so is the TomTom One still the way to go?

Edit: Also, is there anything I could use with a Blackberry 8700?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Personally I'm waiting for the new Tomtom One XL which is out shortly. It's basically an enhanced version of the current One (new version) but with a better GPS chipset, bluetooth support and a 4.3" widescreen display...

I need a new one too - hubs borrowed my TT710 to take to France, pressed the wrong button on the front - the nose-dive button rather than the power on button and it landed on a pointy object which has dented the screen........

Up until then I thought it was very good - although I couldn't get it to connect to my Treo (but then even I struggle to do that)....

    What about the new Blaupunkt?

Get an upgrade on your mobile phone contract to an Orange SPV M600 or SPV M3100, or your providers version of these HTC devices (for me that was £30 and £50 respectively), get a second hand copy of ALK's CoPilot Live 6 for Windoze PPC devices off fleabay for about £50 (including the Bluetooth GPS receiver), Make sure the previous owner has de-activated their copy or it won't work.

You then have a compact speaking Sat-Nav built into your phone, so it's unlikely you will leave it in the car. Shove the GPS in your pocket and set it to walking mode and you can find your way round strange cities on foot if you so desire. The full Europe upgrade is £50 brand new, and includes Eastern European countries. Just used it in Vienna, and it just makes driving around in a foreign country so much less stressfull.

If it's not the VERY latest upgrade of Live 6 you can download the upgrades from Home: ALK Technologies and install the free (yes free) 'safety camera' database which is updated monthly (that worked in Vienna too).

If you don't trust your partner, leave the phone and GPS in their car and you can track their whereabouts on the ALK web site too (though I would never condone such action). Oh, the web site lets you send messages to the Live 6 software too, and gives pop up buttons for answer options.

I really rate this relatively little known software/gps package.

I use tomtom Navigator 5 on a T-Mobile MDA (it's a windows mobile and phone all on one) and it's really rather good. Got a bluetooth GPS receiver off fleabat for £30 that has auto on and off so I leave that plugged into a power socket in the boot out of the way and just get in the car, cradle the phone and fire up tomtom. Very smart. And a single device that you take with you anyway plus I can have all my thousands of business contacts and emails on it too.

I was sceptical before getting it but now I have it, the phone PDA is the dog's danglies. My saleman has one too and loves it to bits.
