| Crapping your suit when diving with Tiger Sharks... By popular request... So last May I was on a Red Sea Liveaboard when the Dive Guide told me about some chap called errr... Fred. Anyway. The story that the Guide told me was that Fred was up in the straits of Tiran, and a Tiger shark had been spotted in the area. He really wanted to take some photos of the Tiger Shark, but this particular Tiger Shark had been beahving particularly aggressively recently, and the Dive Guides were dead against it. But er Fred was desperate to take the photos of the Tiger Shark so he needled the Dive Guide to let him in the water. Eventually the Dive Guides releanted and the three of them (two guides and Fred) met up with the Tiger Shark. Now, although the Guides often dive Inspiration rebreathers, they'd elected not to on this occasion as some people say that the electronic firing of the solenoid fires off the electrical sensors on the sharks and they think you're wounded prey. Unfortunately er Fred, despite being told by the dive guides several times to leave his rebreather on board carried on regardless. Consequently, when the Tiger Shark appeared, it completely ignored the Dive Guides, and went straight for Fred, ignoring everything else in the water. Fred was so scared he literally crapped himself as he scrambled onto the boat and the he had to wash down his wetsuit on the way back to Sharm. I've no idea whether this story is true or not, or whether sharks are attracted to ECCRs, but I believed the guide when he told me at the time. So. There's a moral there for us all. Always pay attention to local knowledge, and don't patronise guides as they will always have the last laugh. Janos
