| Well, the mackerel are still languishing intact in the bottom of the fridge. Spent last night in the pub instead. God, my head hurts today How long do they keep, anyway?

As for gutting, cut off head behind gills, slit along from anus towards head area, remove bloody squishy bits (technical terms for guts) and a quick rinse. A few diagonal slices each side and grill untill slightly crispy. Serve with a bit of horseradish (serving suggestion Adrian

I used to to the gutting off the back of the RIB, then hold the fish tightly over the back. A great way to wash them out Fish is always best fresh and not kept for too long. If the fridge is not really cold, I'd dig a hole in the garden and bury the fish. Better there than the bin. Adrian
