Well, we declared when we got the quote for our new mortgage and the offer of terms came back excluding any claim or continuation of a claim due to "underwater swimming, skin diving or diving with breathing apparatus". we said that was no good so they said we could fill in a diving questionnaire, whcih we did and they cam eback with an increased quote and still no cover! so we told them to stick their policy and are now looking for someone who will cover us.

It is not asking for anything special, but dives to 45m (the limit of our quals), including "non-coastal" as anything outside of a few miles offshore seems to be counted as offshore, so think about those liveaboard holidays, and up to about 80-100 dives a year (being optimistic ).

I'll try Lutine Helen, and see what they say. I am annoyed though - I really don't want to lose my house over a bend.

Thought you might like to know Lutine moved their head office a few years back.

They are now at:

Cheers!

Still, I'd check with Friends Provident about that qoute. Its a bit mad to load for diving and exclude it from claims.

Here we go again, when I took out my Life Assurance/Mortgage protection/Sickness/Injury policies a few years ago I wasnt a diver, when I qualified later I told them. They didnt load my premiums at all, apparently they take you on as a certain risk, if you decide to then start something 'extreme' they accept it without increase costs. However if I want a NEW policy it will be a different matter, for which I am bracing myself. One of my colleagues had to give up diving when his employer switched their Insurers (retirement policy) as they wouldnt cover divers atall, not even at a higher premium.

So, Lou dont worry about anyone who started diving after the initial policy was taken out, they should be covered, of course I also got it in writing, just to be sure. It may be possible to increase the cover on an existing policy and just pay the extra premium for the extra cove without loading.

I had exactly the same experience, no difference if the policy was already in force.

Increasing the cover on an existing policy is often the best option anyway if it's available.

I'm an IFA so if you want any further advice PM me and I'll look into it.

I have two poilicies, cos it worked out cheaper than getting one, after we extended our mortgage. Both policies are with the same company and interestingly when I got the first policy 2 years ago it covers me to 50m, on air. The extra policy I have just got from them prohibits any claims from diving of any kind.

Its not a concern cos the majority of the mortgage is covered through the first policy and the bit that isn't, isn't huge but it is interesting to see how things have changed in two years.

In both cases I had to fill out a questionnaire about my diving.
